What happened?

Don't know about the above anon, but there was an update in which weapon skins were added into the game, making them colorful. Kind of like hattifying weapons, which is a rather clever move from Valve if you think about it. There were new maps, a new variation of payload, and a new taunt that makes the characters do the russian squat dance everywhere. And gives the spy a box (I'm serious).

Canon-wise, the update is set before Gray Mann appears, so Miss Pauling wants new weapons for the mercs since they've been unmotivated to do their jobs. In the comic, it was humorously admitted that there were so many current items the market was not only broken by the over-abundance of new weapons that you could make a chair over them, but that the mercenaries are all nine perfect idiots. Saxton Hale doesn't think four of them can read.
