Don't bother

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

nah I've seen that criticism thrown at fraction, just not by the newer fans who were probably exposed to hawkeye first (not to be gatekeepery like YOU MUST HAVE READ COMICS FOR THIS LONG but your entry point can effect your thoughts on this kind of stuff) or people who are pandered to enough that they don't care

this is a criticism that's thrown around in comics fandom a lot, even, I'd say. of course it's a big enough fandom that there are different corners of it so maybe we've been exposed to different people.

I rarely see anyone call gillen out on it tho because he tries so hard to appeal to fandom and appear progressive(I don't really like the way he handles a lot of that stuff personally) that people who might care in other circumstances don't

fair enough.

i guess it's just my opinion that it happens so often, especially now that creators seem to really be trying to leave their stylistic marks on an era, that i can't be be bothered to be that upset about it if the characterization works within the arc and is entertaining.

I can ignore it enough to enjoy a story in certain contexts--I used to read Hawkeye even if I sometimes sighed about characterization, for example. I only dropped it because I got lazy

but I really don't like Gillen's YA at all.

it just seems really weird to me to be so against gillen's ya for doing things differently when heinberg's was categorically awful

(Anonymous) 2015-07-04 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
right but gillen's obsession with trying to seem hip and progressive while writing storylines like "superpowers made me bisexual" was so much better

ok

(Anonymous) 2015-07-05 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
"superpowers made me bisexual" isn't what happened tho

(Anonymous) 2015-07-05 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
more or less yeah

it was offensive garbage and it being touted as progressive, good writing drives me up a fucking wall

ftr I'm all for him being bi but

he could just you know. figure that out normally. no superpowers involved.

dude he literally says that it was something that was always there, but he didn't always realize it. with his history of repression and compartmentalization actually holding his powers back, that's pretty consistent with who he is. someone psychically unlocking everything in your head is bound to put things in the open you hadn't really worked out.

man Gillen fans really are a bunch of babies

i don't think that heinberg was amazing, but i liked the characters and enjoyed them as a team. then gillen came along and rewrote most of their personalities to the point they were unrecognizable.

never forgiving gillen for ruining kate's personality to the point other writers started to do it too (look at how fraction wrote kate in the early hawkeye issues versus later on when he started to copy gillen's version of her) or devaluing her existence as a member of the team because she doesn't have powers.

not forgiving his tumblr-istic pandering to sjws and idiot teenagers or turning billy and teddy from two young heroes who happened to be gay and in a relationship to the "gay couple." the worst of it is that none of it feels genuine. it all feels like he's some teenager writing a bad fanfic ticking things off a list to make his story more hip and cool for the kids who are so starving for representation (or for sjw points themselves) that they don't realize how shitty a representation it is.
