Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

For people who torrent, how do you avoid getting copyright infringement e-mails? I downloaded a Gintama torrent of all things and now Comcast is on my ass. I didn't even know Gintama was copyrighted.

your first mistake was having comcast

(Anonymous) 2015-06-01 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
If there are better alternatives for my area, I'd love to find them, but a google search tells me I'm SOL.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-01 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
i avoid those by using streaming sites and a video downloader extension in my browser

(Anonymous) 2015-06-01 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have any recs for a video downloader?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-01 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
firefox or chrome?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-01 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Both. FF runs better on my laptop, but Chrome likes my desktop more. I remember having a really good one but then I bought a new computer and forgot about it completely.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-01 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
ive never gotten a copyright infringement email in my life

and gintama is on crunchyroll and hulu, iirc. plus the movie got a us release on dvd

(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
My brother got one for Pitch Perfect. Not because he downloaded but because he kept seeding after he was done.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-01 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
peerblock?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-01 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
This sounds promising. Can you give me more details? Do you use it yourself?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-01 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm lucky and have a local internet provider so i might not have to worry too much? they've never sent me anything like that.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-01 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm insanely jealous.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-01 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Get a different ISP. Comcast is known for spying on users.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-01 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have a choice for my area, alas.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-01 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
i just use peerblock and turn off seeding as soon as the download is done. never had any problems

then again i live in canada and nobody up here generally tends to care that much about piracy

(Anonymous) 2015-06-01 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
How does peerblock work? I just downloaded it, and I'm kind of computer illiterate at times.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-01 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
from the peerblock website's FAQ:

1. What IS PeerBlock?

The short version is: PeerBlock blocks "known bad" computers from accessing yours, and vice versa. Depending on the lists you have it set up to use, you can block governments, corporations, machines flagged for anti-p2p activites, even entire countries! Whether you're sharing files with Bittorrent or just surfing the web, PeerBlock can help protect you from the bad guys.

you just start it up and it does most of the rest for you. i think the default lists should work fine for what youre planning to use it for, so you shouldnt have to tool around THAT much

(Anonymous) 2015-06-01 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
So I just start it up whenever I turn on my computer? I feel like this is so novel because I'm used to all of my programs running the background, haha. I hope it works! I don't torrent often but sometimes I have to for iconing reasons.

Nope, nope, nope. Anon, Peerblock is garbage and basically no better than a placebo when it comes to "blocking" your IP. Any ISP worth their salt can see through it and it's not going to stop them from C&Ding you if you torrent a flagged file.

If you really want to get around it, you need to pay for a dedicated VPN service. Which isn't as bad as it sounds, because I've seen some go for as low as $5 a month, but you may way to Google around for the techy know-how on setting it up. Not too complicated but trust me, Peerblock's not going to do what you want it to do.

Plus its ads are complete ass and slow everything down on your computer, honestly.

I don't torrent because of his unmistakable it is to ISPs. I use direct download sites. warez-bb is a good forum for links.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-02 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
i only dl torrents from one site and i always read the comments because people are good about reporting shit like receiving copyright infringement emails, ending up with trojans bc of a torrent, etc. if you don't read the comments people leave on them, you should.

+1

if there are any problems at all with a torrent, there will usually be comments about it

I recommend getting a seedbox. Like having a VPN but even easier (I say this because a lot of people will get VPN and not even know how to use them right with a torrent client) and if you are part of a private torrent site your ratio will go high as fuck due to the fact you will always be seeding at crazy speeds even when you are not online because your torrents you have downloaded are still being saved for you.

https://www.seedboxco.net/seedboxes.php I like these bastards but there are even cheaper alternatives depending on how much space you want (and you could always delete the file soooo) or perhaps speeds if you are looking into being a power user or w/e.
