they're the stars of a reality show on tlc called "19 and counting". 19 refers to the number of children the parents have- many of those children are grown and married with their own kids as well. they're part of a christian fundie group that (among other things) believes that women exist to pump out more good christian warriors and therefore should be pregnant as often as possible- like, literally as soon as they're able to have another kid after birth they should be impregnated again. and that's just scratching the surface- they're also a powerful force in the anti-lgbt movement. they're basically the model of the Good Moral Christian Family.

their eldest son, josh, just publically admitted that he sexually fondled 5 girls (including a few of his sisters) as a teenager. his parents were aware of the abuse, reported it to a police officer who was a family friend (who proceeded to do nothing and was later busted on child porn charges), and sent him "off to counseling" (and by counseling i mean he was sent to work with a family friend for 4 months). their camp's general attitude about the abuse is "oh, it was just a ~youthful mistake~ and it's brought him closer to jesus so everything's ok really". the crimes weren't investigated until after alabama's statute of limitations had passed so he likely won't be charged for them.

It's pretty gross.

No "likely" about it. If the statute of limitations has passed, they legally can't charge him with anything. Even if other victims who were molested more recently come to light, he'd only be able to be prosecuted for the cases that still fall within the statute of limitations.

Depending on the state's rules for civil matters, the victims might be able to sue, though, if they're not part of the cult and sucked into the whole ~it's not his fault, god forgives~ horseshit parade.

The victims here are, sadly, part of the cult. I imagine that even if they did break away and try to file a civil suit, good ol' Dad will find a friend who's a judge and get that nasty little thing dismissed before it ever goes to trial. (Like he did by 'reporting' to a friend who was a state trooper and is now in jail for a child porn offense.)

they're also massive attention whores.
