You're all idiots except for me

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

why are test drives such a big thing now, serious question

they used to be pretty damn infrequent/unimportant but now it's like people judge a game based on its test drive, why

(Anonymous) 2015-05-19 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The idea got popular because it's fun to be able to play with a setting without going through the app process.

Then people started reading way, way, waaaaay more into them.

idk i never use them myself

Probably due to the lack of dressing rooms and ease of getting threads for a sample now. Back when test drives were more rare we had dressing rooms and it was easier to get tags in a meme, etc.

because they're a low-pressure, obligation-free way to play in a certain game setting with a certain cast. all the prompts and ease of a meme, plus potential for enthusiastic asspatting in the very likely event people want to enable you in.

sa

and it's also a good way for non-players to test the waters. see how they like the setting and castmates, etc.

Probably because there are more obstacles to getting into games nowadays.

Stuff like less frequent app cycles, higher expectations for apps, sometimes app caps. It's a bigger pain to "just app in" and test the waters that way, so now we have a separate "test the waters" meme.

Because they let you get samples and test out how the game works and potentially interact with future game and castmates. IDK why people are ragging on test drives because I do not miss trying to pull samples out of the ether or off dear_mun at all.

i always just write my samples from scratch, tbh. test drives aren't indicative of how the game works either, because it's basically a meme set in game universe. you don't have to deal with the over-arching plot or mod drama or struggling to come up with post ideas or any of that shit. information gleaned from the test drive can literally also be found in the game info if you're talking about worldbuilding stuff.

i miss when we'd just jump into games without having to ~test the waters first~ or need to thread with all potential castmates beforehand. just join a game and see how it goes, half the fun of RPing is just making it up as you go along

though with the way rp culture is evolving where people want instant gratification and are happier talking about rp rather than actually doing it, this makes sense

I only use them if the game allows TDM threads as samples for my app.
