According to this interview (it's at the 19 mark), the head of JAST USA says we're to expect an announcement for either a BL or Otome game at their panel at Anime Expo this year.

Now expect this game to be put in the back burner for around 5-10 years.

good god, he sounds bitter when it comes to the voice actors and their agencies in japan. considering how much of a huge deal the voice industry is in japan, of course japanese companies aren't going to "take a complaint" and potentially screw themselves out of being able to work with that voice actor again just because he asked them to.

i get not being able to license a game due to voice acting fees can be frustrating, but an interview where he's expected to be professional is not the proper place to bitch about that.

while i'm glad we may be getting more otome or bl games, i hope it isn't something i'm interested in tbh. like you said, we'd be waiting a long time for a release if jast gets a hold of it.

Five bucks the new game will either be a BL game (the "biggest" name title I can see them picking up being DRAMAtical Murder due to their connection with Nitroplus/Nitro+Chiral and voice acting fees being easier to negotiate since it's a porn title) or an 18+ Otome game.

dmmd mifht actually be a good candidate. and one i'd be fine with tbh. got no interest in it whatsoever. dunno what 18+otome game they'd go for though.

a part of me is worried that since they've got ties with stoneheads, they'd get shingakkou. or luckydog1 because of those past ties with yura. luckydog1 might be bit iffy since absolute obedience and enzai didn't sell so well iirc.

as much as i'd like those two titles to see a release, i'd rather jast not be the one to get them.

yeah, i hope they don't get their hands on luckydog1 or shingakkou either. dramatical murder i heard was okay so i wouldn't mind trying that one out, but it's nothing i'm dying to play.

i'd rather that jast prove they release shit in a consistent and timely manner first before touching either game. instead of, you know, sitting on a bunch of licensed games for god knows how long and scrambling to release them within a single year when they realize they're going to lose money.

aside from jast being shit in time management, how is the quality of their translations in general?

They're very good. The Jast release of Steins;Gate improves upon the fan translation big time, for example. They seem to have strict quality control.

Too bad it takes them forever to do anything. They have licenses from 2011 (!!) they still have yet to release.

it's assuring to hear their translations are good at least!

though how have they managed to stay in business if it's going to take them 4-5+ years to release a single game

That said, part of the wait for their previous games was that they had Makoto (one of their better translators, if you were around before they started acquiring Nitoplus games he did the Saya fantranslation for instance, and improved on it for the official release) doing QC for literally everything they put out the door, afaik

but he's swapped positions and they have someone else on that now (maybe a couple of people)? so hopefully their production speeds up. I'm not really a fan of how they've handled some things but I'm willing to be cautiously optimistic!
