I once considered RPing him back when Battle for the Cowl was a thing, but I haven't read anything since then and my knowledge on him is a bit rusty. Any general tips or things I should always be aware of if I give him a shot? I don't have a particular canon point in mind besides after the Lazarus Pit.

If you're looking to play Jason before the reboot, you don't really have to look into the New 52 comics; they're similar but separate characters. You might want to check out Convergence: Batman/Robin, though.

In general...Jason's been a pretty contradictory character ever since his introduction. Some writers had him really innocent and light-hearted, like the previous Jason; others had him dark and moody and ruthless; others struck more of a balance. There are more whiplashes after his resurrection - exactly how brutal he is, what his motivations really are, how he feels about the Bats, etc.

I think your best bet is reading all of those appearances and blending them into something coherent, cherry picking when you have to. What's intrinsic to Jason and what's OOC twaddle really depends on opinion, when it comes down to it.

(I'd also rec Legends of the Dark Knight 100; it's got a really sweet story about Jason first putting on the costume. ...Interspersed with Bruce finding his body.)

I figured I'd have to do a little bit of blending with his character - I've done something similar with a few characters where certain things just don't make sense unless I add something from a slightly different source (for example, certain motives of a character not making sense in the original Japanese version of a series, but the dubbed version actually giving a reason for what he does).

But thanks for the link; I don't have the files for the comics I originally had where I was reading for him back then, so this is super helpful for me.

You're very welcome, anon! <3 I think Jason is a ton of fun, but yeah, he's difficult. (I play him Robin-era, so there's...less bullshit to deal with.) But that's true of all long-running comic characters, to one extent or another.

And yeah, I don't intend on playing him in a game or anything (I really don't think I have the balls for that, so more power to the people that do), just gonna throw him at a friend in our dumb musebox stuff for something different. So because of that, I'm not looking for any kind of perfection, but you've been super helpful and I can't thank you enough.
