Simm!Master | Doctor Who

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I think I can avoid the obvious pitfalls: don't eat people, don't be a creeper, don't try to ship with the Doctor.

I'm only playing him for an event, not an extended plot arc, but I'm still looking for characterization advice. He scares the crap out of me, the way he was presented in the show, so how can I get that across effectively, without going too hammy and over the top? And then I remember scenes like the Master pushing the Doctor around in the wheelchair with the Scissor Sisters playing in the background and wonder if it's even possible to go too over the top? But I've seen players manage to do it.

Doctor Who is one of those canons you really shouldn't take too seriously. When I was in a big cast, it basically became Days Of Our Lives: Doctor Who Version, because if you take out all the time and space travel that's kind of what you get left with.

So, honestly, don't be afraid of being too hammy and over the top. It's the Master, and being too much is very difficult with him.

I think what's scary about the Master is the fact that he has no concept of limits. It makes him either hammy and over the top or kind of terrifying. He just doesn't care for holding back. He'll do whatever it takes and whatever he just feels like doing, even if he's also smart enough to be subtle about it if need be. So basically go along with his whims and urges because he would, and try to balance subtlety vs. I just don't give a fuck and I think a lot might come along on its own.

i don't think shipping him with the doctor is a pitfall as long as the doctor's player is onboard...same goes with shipping him with any other character

ayrt

Except that it's wildly OOC for both characters. No woobifying, no shipping, kthx.

i don't really see how it could be ooc but you do you

eh, I think it's possible to ship without woobifying. the Master is obsessed with the Doctor, after all; you turn that into an intensely unhealthy attraction, perhaps a desire to "pervert" the Doctor and turn him over to his side or one to make the Doctor realise that they aren't particularly different (since the Doctor commits his fair share of murders/genocides). he uses whatever tools he has available to manipulate the Doctor. meanwhile, the Doctor has his own thing about fixing/saving the Master in EoT, if it's Ten or early Eleven (well most of Eleven tbh) then there's the whole survivor's guilt bit and being the only two left, etc. it's not hard.

but ymmv.

sorry, I realised I shouldn't argue about ships and then not give you any useful advice. with the Master, it is always impossible to go too over the top. this is a character whose first ever appearance in canon involved a plot trying to kill people by handing out plastic daffodils.

also, yes, my own personal opinion? avoid end of time master, unless that's the specific canon point you're playing from. it's all ridiculous and seriously what was rtd even thinking.

basically, just be evil and sinister and entirely amoral. think that killing is fun, but don't be overly tee-hee about it. get your snark on. realise that Simm!Master, as presented in S3, is deliberately meant to share similarities with Tennant's Doctor.
