An option is to use the popular tool for avoiding copyright lawsuits in the form of slightly changing the name of stuff.

For example, Star Wars becomes Galaxy Battles, Obi-Wan becomes Moby-Tuu, etc. This also adds an extra edge of what the fuckery in terms of the "is this real" scenario, since a situation that is eerily similar to the character's own previous life is about to confuse them.

A problem with this is the fact that names for all canons would have to be invented, so maybe fourth walling should be kept aside for special events?

That's how Trans 9 handles it, actually. Once a character appears on the ship, their canon disappears from the movie collection/library/public awareness, and people automatically remember only copyright-friendly versions like Arachniman, The Superlatives, Housetrapped, etc.

It'd probably be best not to lean too hard on the 4th wall on this one. Besides, it's not like they're going to wake up in their cape and tights. Even someone iconic like Superman is still going to be poofing in with street clothes and memories of being a perfectly normal newspaper drone named Clark Kent with a perfectly normal wife and 2.3 kids.
