I'm the anon who suggested having a small OC cast who are all townies. It'll help the sense of "whoa, are my memories wrong or is this place wrong?" if there's plenty of interaction with characters who insist it's all true. When NPCs are mostly handwaved, it's easy to forget them, and just things become the generic jamjar. :(

Oh my god, I love this idea.

I never play OCs in games, but I might port one in to help out a bit as a townie.
