Except that Mayfield is horror based with everyone being sorted into very structured families, knowing from right off that something is wrong and struggling against it.

There are only so many ways to play with this premise. Small Town, USA, is reasonable without having to do a ton of research, since the US already tends to have a lot of culture mixing because it's the US. A Victorian-era one, like suggested elsewhere, has a lot of customs of the times that would have to be researched to make it Victorian as opposed to superficially Victorian, which is already going to be a huge turn-off. As well, a modern setting (as opposed to 1950s) gives far more ways to communicate and interact.

This isn't like Pleasantville, which has very subtle and very blatant horror undertones. This has some slight creepiness to it, but is otherwise PG.
