inspired by the neopets RP thread above, how many of you started RPing on AOL? not AIM, but legitimately AOL chat rooms. straight up rhydin (RhyDin? Rhy'din? Rhy`din??) or ~red dragon inn~, that shit.

my first foray into AOL RP was star wars circa 1997 (i'm old), which kind of mashed-up with rhydin in a pseudo-fantasy/scifi jamjar thing. but my first real involvement in RP was FF7 RP, which was actually insane: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/issues/issue_114/1472-Midgar-is-Burning

I remember Red Dragon Inn! But yeah, I started on AOL chat rooms and got involved with a group doing Sailor Moon RP. It was cheesy at times and most of us were clueless about our characters since we often were playing characters not in the dub and getting subs was hard back then but it was fun. And yeah, it was around 96-97 for me too.

I was 13 when I found my first RP partner in an AOL kids chat room. I played Prince Eccentro to their Mon Colle Knights OC. I had no idea what we were doing was a common hobby until I was much older.

like that other anon, i started roleplaying in an animorphs chatroom called cassies barn. then i branched out into pokemon, where i befriended roleplayers like jax the bat (who'd go on to become infamous, just check out that ED article). i was also around for all the ff7 ridiculousness; i've stayed in touch with someone from that era. (they went on to try to recreate midgar in second life...?) also, dragon ball's ::doj:: ::hit:: ::doj:: ::doj:: chatrooms. using dice rolls (//roll-sides65-dice3) for sparring and gaining experience. order of the crimson star from rhy'din - ssol°anon and echo lilac. aol's officially sponsored roleplays (with applications!) where i played some guy named mint on a spooky plantation. i was also deep into the digimon scene, and later on, kingdom hearts. if anyone out there remembers chain reaction... yeah.

Totally used to play in RDI back in the day. There's apparently a bunch of old people from that who opened up their own chat thing that's still current, if you want to go looking for it.

I started with the Multiplayer Battletech RP board, which was kindof like Mechwarrior Online back in the day. I then branched out to rec.games.pokemon and their pokewars megathread. I also played in Utena and Evangelion RPs on yahoo groups. Does anyone do that anymore?
