Chicken-fucking is not valid employment

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

the way america reacts to 18+ kids still living at home is still so weird to me
i mean i definitely agree that asking them to wash the fucking dishes isn't abuse but this whole "you're 18 so now you're like a stranger to me and i should kick you out" attitude always feels really puzzling

it isn't

americans are weird

if you're living with your parents past 20 you're a failure, no matter the circumstances

it really is. i'm (american) 20+ and living at home, and i feel depressed all the time because of it. i have a full time job, it just doesn't pay me enough to get anything bigger than a shoebox apartment. logically i know it isn't a big deal to still be living with my parents, but it's such an internalized thing that i feel like a failure constantly. i'm always defensive about it when people ask me where i live. i never have friends over because i'm embarrassed. it's part of our society, you graduate college and you're instantly independent. if you move back home, you're a failure and a joke.

it's not exaggerated. if you live at home while attending college, you're considered lazy scum.

while *at* college? like i thought post-graduation was bad enough but while *at* college? living on campus can be as expensive as fuck and american unis sound expenisve enough as it is.

i meant to say that it even happens to people going to college, not that it happens especially to college students, sorry if it didn't make sense!

yeah, it's sad. It's obviously a huge reason college students are so stressed here.

it really is. i'm on disability, and it allows me to pay rent and help with groceries and things; there's no way i could live by myself. and my dad couldn't pay the mortgage and all by himself either, so it works out. it's the best thing for us.

but i still feel like a failure.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-08 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
it's fucking gross

i moved out of the us and i notice the way people treat their kids here is pretty different

it's just accepted that the cost of living is absurd so if you don't make enough to have your own place and/or are still going to school, you live at home. it's not even a question

(Anonymous) 2015-03-08 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
in a past thread, someone said it started during the depression, when families kicked out kids older than 15 or so out of necessity because they couldn't afford to feed them and they'd be better off making their own way

then it just never stopped

tbh I think it's very slowly starting to change, but it's still pretty extreme compared to other places

it comes up here all the time, especially the older you get. even if you do have a job or take care of the house or whatever
