continuing gray discussion

(Anonymous) 2015-02-04 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
from here: http://rpanons.dreamwidth.org/54051.html?thread=162874659#cmt162874659

I wouldn't count being in gray on the downtime months as part of the punishment. They were arguably disadvantaged during murder plot, but there were still opportunities to get involved. If people are stuck there for the whole of Macha despite improving then I think it would be something to complain about, but Macha is the time for grays to prove themselves.

Yes, they're barred from one thing on the calendar. But there are other opportunities to participate and prove themselves. Why would anyone have earned their way off it by now? I think people are complaining about it because they want the easy way out. I'm glad that the mods aren't letting flakes and squatters get away with continued bad behavior without showing improvement. Imo it's a big problem this game has.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-04 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
the entire point is that it isn't supposed to be a punishment, though.

Re: continuing gray discussion

(Anonymous) 2015-02-04 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
imo it depends on the player's individual mindset. grays are at a disadvantage, but it's also a solid chance for them to prove themselves to earn their way back to their teams. they also aren't barred from, say, medical if they want to use that to help. most players are seeing it as a punishment instead of a challenge or an opportunity, so they're not going to be able to make very much of it.

Re: continuing gray discussion

(Anonymous) 2015-02-04 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
if they're not going to work on the things that got them on gray in the first place then how do they expect to leave that team?

Re: continuing gray discussion

(Anonymous) 2015-02-04 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
that's what I think too. it's good that the mods aren't letting people bring their teams down. people have the opportunity to improve if they want to take it - the problem with most rpers is they want the easy road

Re: continuing gray discussion

(Anonymous) 2015-02-04 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, on the other hand, their options to RP are limited, and that sucks no matter how you slice it. More than that, it's harder for them to 'prove themselves' with less options.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-04 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm looking at the calendar and I'm not seeing too much limitation. No more than the normal sort that any other team would get if they weren't going on a mission and another team was. There's a gag order against them on one mission, and they have to do clean up tasks but otherwise they're allowed to participate in most of everything else.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-04 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
exactly. if they're only barred from one thing, they're hardly at a huge disadvantage this calendar. look at things like the gray log. it's not that the opportunities aren't there, but that they aren't taking them.

Personally, I see it less as a punishment and more as a wake-up call.

People who were put in gray but really do love the game will be willing to invest the effort needed to get placed back on their teams, and have motivation not to be put there again.

People who were put in gray and aren't willing to put the effort into getting back out would have, sorry, most likely continued to drag their teams down. I know that it's generally taboo to tell people they don't belong at a certain game, but CDC isn't a relaxed game and is not a good choice for players who prefer to go at a relaxed pace.

Gray team is a good way to motivate people to get their asses in gear, AND a good way to clear out the players who just can't keep up with the game while still giving them a fair opportunity to try again.

see, I wouldn't mind this if the mods were just upfront about it.

It's a punishment. Just own up to that.

Re: continuing gray discussion

(Anonymous) 2015-02-04 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
anon

it's only a punishment if you see it that way. like ayrt said, it's a wake-up call

Re: continuing gray discussion

(Anonymous) 2015-02-04 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
the mods have said it's not intended as one. the whole point is essentially to reintegrate the characters who aren't performing well.

for people like Shepard it IS a punishment. she deserves being stuck there until she can learn how to play nice

Re: continuing gray discussion

(Anonymous) 2015-02-04 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
our mods aren't perfect, but thank fucking god a team finally had the balls to put their foot down with yet another obnoxious shepard

so sick of seeing them charge into games and just immediately demand that the whole plot revolve around them, everyone listen to them by default, etc. with zero consequences for acting like a shithead just because their canon narrative caters to them

Re: continuing gray discussion

(Anonymous) 2015-02-04 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
she is a perfect example of people who didn't pay attention to the premise before applying. it's a team game, not a Shepard game. she's using PKN7 to try and demand that authority instead, which is a shame because it would be a good initiative if she wasn't trying to make it into her own team

Re: continuing gray discussion

(Anonymous) 2015-02-04 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
if they want the player out of the game they should have just kicked them imo

it's a punishment for people who have jobs/school/lives and can't be on their computers 24/7

how dare they want to play in our sandbox too

Re: continuing gray discussion

(Anonymous) 2015-02-04 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
so every game needs to cater to the slowest possible taggers now lest they be ~punishing~ them?

Re: continuing gray discussion

(Anonymous) 2015-02-04 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
on the one hand, this is incredibly weak bait

on the other hand, playing in cdc basically is like taking on another homework assignment so i can't really disagree with it either

Re: continuing gray discussion

(Anonymous) 2015-02-04 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
it didn't take long for you to show up

the mods have never punished people for being slow. the game caters fairly well to people setting their own pace. everyone on gray either flaked out of important missions or never bothered being there in the first place

I just said I see it as a wake-up call, NOT a punishment, so I don't think they have anything to own up to.

Not everything unpleasant is a punishment. Look at it this way: you fail a test and the teacher makes you come to detention, where you have to sit quietly and do nothing. THAT'S a punishment.

Now imagine you fail a test and the teacher gives you an opportunity to re-take the test IF you hand in the homework from last week that you forgot and come to a tutoring session for a few hours on Saturday. It might not be something you're psyched about. You have to spend more time on homework and miss hanging out with your friends on Saturday. But I wouldn't call it a punishment, it's a second chance to do better AND a wake-up call that you need to shape up if you don't want to be in that situation again.

This isn't dispelling anon's point above that CDC is more like homework than a game.
