I'm the anon from up thread who was looking at characters to app, and man this adds another to my list now. It's tough though looking in at the game and not being sure how to get that traction to build up a more politics inclined character, I'm rusty at it as man the last few games I've been in have been action oriented.

So I guess what I'm asking here is, thoughts on how easy it is/ways in game that are available for folks to do that! Does it rely on quests now or are there other openings? Especially with the changes I read about that are coming.

actual advancement seems to be quest related, but there are generally posts put up by the mover/shaker chars that you can find yourself getting involved in, which can give you goals to aim for re: quests.

it also depends on what kind of traction you want. it's okay if you don't know yer, you're not in the game so you have yet to familiarise yourself with the environment. the world is really rich so there are a lot of avenues you can pursue.

but going back to ayrt's question quests are a big part of it, but so is just taking part in things, but, again, it does depend on what you want.

If you have time, I'd suggest taking a look at a development in-game if you haven't been made aware of it here http://fairywoes.dreamwidth.org/157872.html, but two new strongholds are being built and players made cases for their characters to get a title to be a part of ruling them. I suggest looking because even if you might be lacking some context, you can see the variety of characters that vied for it and what they have going for them: not everyone that ultimately got it is on the influence board but most of them are, some come from political backgrounds in their canons, there are mentions of where and how they've been visible in-game and how that is relevant, listing in-game contacts, etc.

I'm not presuming to know mod reasoning, but those that won did for a reason, so maybe try to take cues from them. (A lot of people who didn't get it are pretty great, too) I'm not sure who you're thinking about apping but even if they didn't start as something political, they still can be. do quests, since they icly distinguish your characters as per the influence board, but also get involved in the world. speaking as someone who's modded, i'd be more inclined to giving something like this to a character who was participating instead of one who might objectively be much more qualified but was just scraping by.

i'll actually say that my character may or may not have clout, and i am a slower player too, so while we do have activity powerhouses in the game, it's not something you absolutely need to be to get ahead, either!

beware. quests may or may not be brutal to you for wordcounts. i'm not complaining because they're not mandatory--i could easily just not do them--but you gotta earn them stars yo. And you will.

clarification: it's one white citadel and 10 black spires - one of which is still unspoken for.

I wasn't sure which of the two characters I was debating to app first, both would be awesome Seelie guys. This helps a lot honestly, because I think I'll app one of the guys that would be a little easier to get into the fighting and quest stuff, I've got another one in mine that'd be awesome politically but IDK if I could do that without knowing the game better.

So thanks for the help! And lol I'm not afraid of wordcounts really, I'm always looking for a reason to write short story stuff so!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
np, but i feel like i should correct you on quest stuff, because it looks you're conflating the two, but if not, I'll just clarify: you can have different kinds of quests. They're not all action/adventure or action-based adventure. There are political and mystery quests, too. So there are characters who aren't Big Damn Heroes who are doing them, too. You pick based on what would suit your character's interests, needs, and inclinations, and the mods tailor them based on the information you give them in the form.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
nah I'm not, but I'm also looking at other events that have gone on in the game as well! Which seem to be amping up more war like (correct me if I'm wrong), so I'm trying to strike a balance of both sorta kinda. Quests are awesome, but being able to do events would be nice too.

It's on me for not being clear enough in what I was thinking! But thank you for the clarification.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
no, it's no problem! and my b for the incorrect assumption then, sorry about that!

and yeah, shit is getting so real, anon, so real, but there are options that aren't strictly fighting--not that i would fault you for wanting to get in on beating shit down. we all know more or less what's going to happen for february in that there will be a lot of battles, but i'm not sure what'll happen for the next couple of months after that, and then there's the skip if it happens.

but if it helps, events have felt more or less pretty accessible to me? (people can chime in to disagree) and even if things are getting more severe and dire, i think the versatility will still be there. like this month in particular is a war prep month, which saw people training and, but also coordinating, seeing refugees to safety, working defenses, doing medical prep, scouting, a whole bunch of stuff.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
bah it's cool, it's late and i'm not making too much sense probably!

And yeah I guess I'm just trying to pick which character at this point I want to play? The two possibles lean either a little more politically for one guy and a little more action in the other but both can do both.

But it's good to know on that! Because it means I'm just being dumb instead and should just stop waffling.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
even if your possibilities leaned hard one way or the other i think you'd be just fine! but if both can do both, sounds pretty swell.

so yes, you're not dumb, but stop waffling and work on those apps, gosh. (<3) oh i would suggest maybe camping the app page. more than half the slots filled out in like 5-6 minutes and apps closed in under a day. i'm curious as to how it'll turn out, but with people knowing well in advance that there's going to be a cap, I wouldn't be surprised if things filled out faster.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
the cap is going to be a bit bigger this time and even last time there was a huge time gap of there being 5 slots left. so with a higher cap, i think most people should be able to get in.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, i know, and i remember the gap, and everything might be just fine, but i do know some people were still trying to write apps in that time, so i'm just thinking of the people who didn't make it who might have finished their apps by now, on top of any newly-interested parties.

regardless, im curious to see how things pan out.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
honestly? i don't get holding off until the last minute to do an app. if you have an interest in a game, get your app together. don't wait until the day apps open. don't wait until the day before. i'd almost say 'don't even wait until you reserve'. if you have the intent to app, write the damn thing up as soon as you can. get it in the first day. it helps lessen the load on the mods (which is why there's a cap in the first place) and it gets your stuff in early so you're not coming in a week and a half after everyone else. these are the people that complain that no one's hitting up their top level on the intro log because they came in when most people are at their thread limit/have enough on their plates/are wrapping up threads.

i have no sympathy for people that don't start their apps until just before apps open, particularly if they've known for a week/month that they were going to app.

oh anon, believe me i'm right there with you. i don't understand it either, but it doesn't mean that it's not still going to happen. but i still find it funny, i remember a tittybaby on wg getting morally outraged because of the last minute cap and i might have seen their point if it didn't entirely revolve around how some people were still canon reviewing and writing.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, i remember that too. i can actually sympathize with the last round's surprise of the last minute cap the day before they opened. that was justifiably out of the blue. but the fact that like you said, there were people still reviewing and writing the day before apps open, people i know take a week to get apps together... what the fuck did they expect? i've been pinged by a game near the last rush of apps and still managed to get one written up on the same day. that people have to take a week to do it baffles me. if you know you're going to take that long start before the fucking apps open.

i bet you money they're the ones that bitch the loudest when 'apps are taking so long to approve'.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
i would not take that bet, anon. i like having my money.

the metaplot isn't all fighting and war stuff, so don't think you have to app in a fighter to get involved in it. it only looks like that right now because there's a major battle coming up next month, but things are supposed to settle down again after that whether there's a timeskip or not. the metaplot events of previous months have also been diplomatic or political or intrigue kind of things. saralegui and waver have been involved in a lot of stuff and both been mentioned here, but neither are really "fighter" types. waver barely uses his magic, and saralegui doesn't seem to fight at all.
