Dystopian Memory Loss/AU

(Anonymous) 2015-01-14 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Thinking of making a game an anon mentioned a couple months ago here: http://rpanons.dreamwidth.org/51605.html?thread=153756565#cmt153756565

Basic set up is a dystopian town where people are being kidnapped from their worlds and brainwashed to replace the AU versions that went against the government's rules in some way and were "dealt with." Others could accidentally brought in and they are brainwashed with a new life as if they just moved into the town. But some characters are real AUs and the people who are jamjar-ed will eventually get their memories back and realize they aren't who they think they are.

This would probably be a small to medium sized game with an overall cap of no more than 50 characters to start. Might be willing to bump it to 75 or 100 later if it had enough interest and it all goes well. Cast caps at 5-7 characters to keep it fair and diverse. All characters would be apped into the game with their powers completely nerfed but with the ability to gain them back over time if they are a jamjar-ed character.

I'm debating whether I want the town to have a Cold War feel to it (maybe it's from an AU world where the Cold War went differently and the town isolated itself for preservation) or a more futuristic sci-fi little city. Either could be fun.

Does this sound interesting to anyone? Any thoughts on what you'd like to see in a game like this?

Would anyone else be willing to help mod? I know I wouldn't be able to handle it all myself and I'd love to have at least one other co-mod. Really two or three would be great to keep the plot of the game going steady with the kind of NPC involvement that would be necessary.

this would be awesome as a future sci-fi. would it be a little town in space?

Currently thinking of more of a Stepford Wives town but set in the future. 1950s Perfect Suburbia atmosphere with a lot of World of Tomorrow type details.

the stepford wives thing is a nice touch

so you're resurrecting Mayfield?

I'd kill for a Mayfield: Where Things Actually Happen game.

This would be Mayfield without being shitty

I don't know much about Mayfield. Never played there and didn't ask much about it to the friends who did. I know it had a 1950s "perfect on the outside" suburb nuclear family setting, but that's not exactly what we're doing. Similar yes, but different enough that I would hope people will look at this game without preconceived notions.

And mentioned above we are going for something more futuristic, but based in part on what they would have assumed the future to be like in the 1950s. If this isn't something you're interested in, that's more than okay, but I think there is a place for a game like this.

Maybe reconsider the 1950's thing

Mayfield did that already and while I know it's not Mayfield it has enough similarities that that's one similarity that doesn't need to be there

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe people who liked the setting of mayfield but didn't like the actual game would enjoy the opportunity

(Anonymous) 2015-01-16 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
why should a game that closed years ago prevent them from using a few similar details today for a game that has a pretty different premise and genre?

and they didn't say it was set in the 1950s, they said 1950s ideal future setting.

+1

we've had and do have a ton of god-run sex games, space games, and apocalyptic city games. who cares if stepford suburbia is used more than once?

"Need?" I'm not sure I understand the argument you are making here about what is and isn't necessary. We're not trying to make another Mayfield (as I mentioned above I don't know enough about it), but we're also not going to avoiding using things we like just so people won't think we are. If we avoided making games based on what's already been used most of the games that exist right now wouldn't.

I would like to think we're making it different enough because of the different premise that the two games wouldn't be conflated with each other.

Those first two sentences (of which the second, btw, is basically pure "putting words in your mouth" -- there was no "argument" or discussion about what is "necessary") accomplish nothing but being jabs at the person you're talking to.

Is this how you're going to take ALL thought-out concrit phrased in a gentle way?

(What's with the "we"?)

future sci-fi could be pretty fun!

or even a quiet little stepford town that, once you wander far enough out of city boundaries, quickly degenerates into cyber dystopian slums. or a city with a literal underground that characters could use as a base for future rebellion or whatnot -- like an actual two-faced city idk

def interested in this game though!

Thank you! I do hope that what we decide to go with in the game will be interesting enough and give players a lot of things to do.

adding my +1 of interest here. do you think you'd be allowing ocs out of curiosity? (not that it's a dealbreaker though)

Yes, OCs will be accepted!

Also very interested in this game OP. I'd love to see more of what you have even if you are still setting up.
