are you watching to pick up a potential muse? if so, it depends on the character you want to try, since some characters don't appear at all (char) while others go through important story arcs (bright, haman).

if not, i wouldn't bother, honestly. zz was a big mess and definitely not tomino at his best. i wouldn't rely on the gundam wiki either as it's pretty terrible all around, but zz overall just didn't have a huge impact beyond the second war imo and giving char time to stew and prepare for his rebellion proper. it's forgettable.

I was looking to pick up Char or Sayla from an earlier canon point with some Origin thrown in for good measure. Haman was cool and I want to know where things go with her and Zeon, just not for picking her up.

That's the basic gist of what I read in reviews and asking around. The shift in tone from Zeta and Double sounds crazy to, it's meant to act as a second season isn't it?

I guess I won't be picking it up and give something a skim to see what happened. Thanks for the help anon!

sayla's va actually, uh, died (not sure if it was pre-zz or not but i think so) so she's another character that's largely irrelevant in zz. char is a similar case as noted. i would HIGHLY recommend keeping up with origin as you've been doing because it goes into a fantastic amount of detail regarding their backstory while still remaining fairly compatible with the original series. not to mention origin is just great all around.

i'm not sure i'd call zz a second season necessarily, but it is a logical follow-up given what happens. it's just a major tonal shift as you've been told already and basically boils down to haman gets mad, neo zeon war starts, pewpewpew newtype magic, neo zeon war ends, oh great finally we can relnope looks like char's at it again and then immediate segue to char's rebellion. please do yourself a favor and watch unicorn! a lot of people shit on it but it really is a logical wrap-up to quite a few storylines, char's especially.

you could give zz a trial run, knowing more canon never hurts, but i was pretty disappointed with it and the writing is... questionable. more so than usual. depends on how much time you have available and want to sink into it.

I knew something happened, but didn't know it was because her VA died. She seemed relevant in 79 and Origin far as I've read it. I watched the anime first and going through Origin as I get hands on it.

The tone shift is jarring to say little of it. Not gonna lie, I'm disappointed it went that direction. Original plans were to make Char the main character I've been told, never thought to actually put research forward to see if it was true.

The opening scared me away tbh lol. Writing in Gundam is all around questionable it seems, but I'm here for the robots and philosophy full of fallacy.

Unicorn is on my docket and the animation has me wanting to watch it already.

japan has a big thing about not replacing seiyuu if they die. sayla got reused clips later on in video games/cameos, but they never bothered to find a new VA. which will be particularly interesting because origin has been greenlit for movies and sayla's not going to be a kid forever in those. char & sayla is the origin volume to look out for, i believe that's where the meat of the backstory is.

char was originally going to be in zz, but tomino got the rights to a movie so you get to see all of his intended story arc in cca instead. it's a great movie if a little Weird, just in the endearingly gundam sort of way. i can't say for sure how he would've worked out in zz but i did like the ending for the movie all the same.

by the way, this a short scene from the zeta ps2 game that i feel makes the cca transition to total crazy a lot less jarring, you might enjoy this being fresh off zeta (spoilers for zz but they're super obvious anyway):

i'm really biased in favor of unicorn, but imo it's gundam at its best. the writing is sharp, the animation is top notch, and char finally gets the resolution he deserved. people will inevitably bark how IT'S NOT EVEN CANON!!! due to coming so late after everything else but i don't think it really changed anything all that much and it still makes sense in the overall timeline. if you like robots and you like philosophical discussions at length unicorn is perfect for you.

I'm one of those people who hate Unicorn. Not because it comes late though, but because it's a "Zeon did nothing wrong!" wankfest with retcons put in only to make Zeon look better and the Federation look worse. It's also based on light novels written by the Japanese equivalent of Tom Clancy, a nationalist whose every work exists only to spread his political agenda. Remember that for a lot of japanese Gundam fans, Zeon == Japan and Feds == America.

Also Banagher is an unlikeable whiner, even by Gundam standards where "unlikeable whiner" is the standard MC template.

At least the fight scenes are pretty.

"everyone has blood on their hands" is a literal, inarguable plot point and as someone who's blown through the OVAs multiple times i have no idea what retcons (beyond the box, which is also questionable) you're even talking about frankly

not liking banagher is understandable and i'm even cool with not liking unicorn for whatever reason, but the hurrdurr zeon fankwank mentality really needs to stay on /m/ because it's not even close to being true

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Zinnerman's backstory - Federation never even occupied Side 3, what about murdering civilians there.

And yes the Laplace Box's existence counts too. Nothing questionable there.

/m/ will call anything zeonwank unless it portrays Zeeks as child-eating monsters (War in the Pocket, really? /m/ plz) but in Unicorn's case it's true.

unicorn had some pretty good music going for it too.

It's Hiroyuki Sawano so yes the music was pretty sweet
