Tits up!

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

is there anybody in dwrp that you consider to be excellent or at least above average at characterization and writing interesting tags? i'm not asking for namedrops, but i'm always seeing anons say all rpers suck, are terrible writers, and don't know how to be IC. do you know of people who are better than that, or are you with the people who say this is just a hobby and we're kidding ourselves if we think anyone we play with is actually good?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
yes

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
good is subjective.

good for us is still bad for real writing. sure a lot of rpers are good at characterization, but rpers as a whole play characters that are shallow to begin with. if we played complex characters with real depth the shit levels would go up exponentially.

the bar is very low for us, there's nothing wrong in admitting that.

yup

there's a reason we almost exclusively play from children's canons, generic urban fantasy, and sci fi action blockbusters

nothing wrong with that. I value fun and icness more than ~objectively good~ writing.

You are an idiot.

What kind of "real" writing? There's so many different styles and genres it's not even funny.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
real writing. you mean like

stephanie meyer?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
i do know a few genuinely good writers! they're the ones who can play any character and make me actually get invested in what happens to them even if i'm completely canon-blind, because the writing itself is so compelling and they do much more showing than telling

and then i know a lot of rpers people say are good but it's really just a lot of unusual formatting and bells and whistles to dress up a turd. that might sound harsh, but i just finished scrolling past some of these in a test drive and despairing a little because i find them the most tedious the play with

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
yes but they don't rp in games

honestly i don't expect much in games. we like to pretend memes are just quick and dirty shit, but games are just as shallow and ooc. and that's fine, but we need to call things what they are

the rpers who insist everyone is terrible are desperately trying to make themselves feel better about their own terrible writing tbqh

there are definitely some players who stand out to me as capable of producing some really good material that'd actually be worthy of publishing, but only a few of them write creatively in their own time and do original work, and it's kind of a waste

I just feel bad for them. They remind me a lot of high school kids who adopt this cynical, "misanthropic," and 2edgy persona to cope with the fact that they're so socially maladjusted that they can't make friends.

I don't think it's a waste if people prefer a hobby to the absolutely grueling demands of the publishing industry, but the people who denigrate everyone's writing lumped together super give me this vibe

i actually tend to have less fun rping with people who want to write tags like they're writing a literary novel

if someone's just having fun with the tags, the tags honestly flow better than if they're trying and failing to write 'well.'

I wish people would just come to peace with the fact they're not writing a fucking insightful commentary with every tag, since some rpers get so caught up on this that they just never fucking tag.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
one of my friends excels at every character she picks up, and i'm jealous. she's so good at nuance and delving into motivations and making everyone everywhere want to thread with her by being so gagdamned interesting. i wish i could do that.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
i have never seen her play a character badly or not get their voice down. i can hear the character's voices in every tag and i honestly don't know how she does it.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
There are several people at my game I'd consider really good writers, both in terms of characterization and prose. It's not necessarily apparent in every thread - characterization is the kind of quality where you see the full richness of what they bring to it explored over time, and snappy network dialogue may not showcase their talent as much as log or action threads - but I'm still impressed by them when it does show.

Also, being a good writer for RP isn't necessarily the same skillset as fiction writing, it involves being flexible and reactive instead of the character and plot being planned out in specific ways. There's a lot of overlap, of course! But it's still different tasks and that's okay.

i wish more people understood this

I've never played with a terrible writer, but some have been a bit dull perhaps.

There definitely are excellent writers. For me that means sentences that flow well, believable dialogue and a versatile vocabulary. Some people are just amazing with words.

Here and on tumblr. I can think of one player from each venue whose writing I can really respect.
