Question from a not quite newcomer.

How necessary is it to play through the visual novel before picking up a character from this series? I've seen the original anime, the both UBW adaptations, read the manga, read Zero, etc. but I've never once been able to get past maybe 2 hours of the original game.

I've heard that the new UBW anime is actually a pretty thorough adaptation of that route and more than sufficient for anyone looking to play from it, but I'd like second opinions before I dive in.

Unless you're playing one of the characters like Caster or Taiga whose roles are very minor anyways, it's pretty necessary. The problem with Fate/Stay Night is that it is a very, very long visual novel, which also means that skipping over it means that you're going to miss a lot about the characters. If you're playing one of the main characters especially (Shirou, Saber, Rin, Sakura) there's a ton of stuff about each of these characters that you learn through narration, so you'd never see it in UBW or the other materials.

That said, I totally understand that reading a vn can be a pain in the ass, especially one as long as f/sn, so my recommendation is actually to check out the great text+picture LP here:

I find it a lot easier to actually get through when I canon review. This also makes it easier to just cherrypick if you're interested in a particular character, but without reading the whole thing first, it's impossible to know who's in a particular scene based on the title. Nasu doesn't like descriptive titles...

You're going to have to play through the VN, or at least read the http://lparchive.org/Fatestay-night/ let's play of it. (It's just screenshots of the text boxes, but it's faster since you don't have to click through it/wait for effects to play.)

UBW is a great adaptation, but every route is 'canon' and provides information on characters. You couldn't play Ilya without knowing things stated in Heaven's Feel, for instance, and the movie will probably be cutting lots of things for time.

You could play characters who appear exclusively in Fate/Zero, though.

thirding that you need to get through the VN if you're playing one of the major characters, and even quite a few of the minor ones. sorry, anon, dems the breaks. disagree that the ubw adaptation is more than good enough for reasons already listed as there's a lot in the narrative you're going to miss.

but the lp the other two anons linked you is absolutely solid and saves a LOT of time so i'd say give that a shot and see if it works out. nasu is definitely not the best when it comes to narrative but i find the more you read the more you get used to his style.

the lper linked also blissfully skips over the awful sex scenes so that's an additional plus.

Like the other anons said, it depends who you want to play. Here I'll give you a quick breakdown.

Fate: Saber route. Kirei, Gilgamesh, Rider, Rin and Illya get heavy focus.
UBW: Rin route. Saber, Gilgamesh, Lancer, Archer, Caster and (Fake) Assassin get heavy focus.
Heavens Feel: Sakura route. Rider, Saber, Illya, Rin, Archer and Kirei get heavy focus.

Basically if you plan to play Shirou, Rin or Saber, you have to go through all three routes. Most others you only need one or two routes to get the most info on them because they play such small roles in certain routes.

This crowd? You'll do fine. The fandom purists rpers have all but dried up at this point, if not shuffled to museboxes. Just don't bring it up and you'll do fine. Everyone's too busy shipping or mini-adventuring to really care about stringently sticking to canon interpretations, anyway.
