(Anonymous) 2014-10-23 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)but i went in having played many a mikami game, so i wasn't expecting some amazing story. it is what it is and i love it for that, despite wanting to tear my hair out at some parts. it's definitely survival horror and anyone claiming otherwise probably hasn't played the core "survival horror" games.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-24 01:31 am (UTC)(link)it's barely survival horror, it's sloppier than it should have been and as others have mentioned before it is basically resident evil 4 but with characters that were dull and gave you no reason to care about them. when the big bad is the most compelling character and you give no fucks at all about anyone else that's just shoddy story-telling.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-24 03:56 am (UTC)(link)you cared about re4 characters because they're part of a franchise and you've probably played other games involving them. sebastian was a pretty bland protagonist but how is this new for survival horror? and how is the game not survival horror? you can argue some segments are far too action-packed for the genre but overall, it hits every checkmark.
but you're probably going to argue with me and not agree because you seem mad about this.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-25 06:00 am (UTC)(link)survival horror is just a blanket genre these days. this game is more psychological horror/thriller at best. you still had tons of ammo drops sitting in big attache cases, weapons strewn about, full arsenal of guns, etc. there were at times where i couldn't pick up any ammo drops because my inventory was full (even on higher difficulties) and mikami offsets this by having a lot of cabin scenarios. oddly placed sections in game that were meant to drain the player of resources and then the whole cycle repeats again.
mikami's a genre-namer, but there are so many other games that do 'survival horror' better these days that making this game was pretty, well, useless. it brings nothing new to the table, it hadn't really revived much, it was just a project to rehash his beta re4 plans on a bigger budget. mikami's a great developer when he doesn't pigeonhole himself in his genrebaby, especially when he's attributed to changing it anyway. suplexes, melees, qtes. ppl just seem to forget that.
besides, games like outlast and even alien isolation are more fit to be called survival horror these days. be sure to check those out if you can, nonnie.
