what anime are you watching, exactly? the only recent show i can think of that uses it is cross ange

sao is based on light novels though, and they're easy spoilers to come across if you bother to look, so they should be expected

Valvrave, and Kill la Kill like I mentioned in OP (I didn't actually watch Valvrave and Cross Ange btw when I said reinterest I meant paying remote attention to what's being released). Really I just want to know if it's a fad or not since I don't have the perspective to tell.

No, not at all. Like it's in some shows and sometimes it's handled in hackney ways but it isn't in every anime or something. Heck, it's not even in that many. It's mostly only in shows that're either creepy by design (Cross Ange), or shows trying really hard to be edgy (Valvrave)
