To be honest, more often than not, I can't get into an amazing plotline if none of the people involved hold my interest, and on the other hand I can enjoy something stupidly trite if I like the idea of the characters, or if they bring something unique to it by playing off each other well.

TL;DR usually the former, but of course it can depend.

there's a certain amount of mediocre character I can tolerate but the 1st is part of why I got trapped in SAO (the other part was because I mistook it for an anime about MMO)

First for me. I've played from some real garbage just because there was some potential in the character, and if you RP it's basically relocating them to a different plotline anyway. :) I also think something with strong characters makes it easier to enjoy the fandom/fanworks side of things, because you can do more with the characters if they're well fleshed-out.
