It's unfortunate that they've realized that the most popular Avatar characters are still all ATLA characters.

the ATLA characters barely get screentime this is a nonissue.

It's not so much that they get screentime. My problem with how Toph was handled was that it pretty much takes all attention away from Korra, the main character of the show in an episode called 'Korra Alone' where she's at a very difficult time in her life. Then there's that stupid photgraph of Aang.

I'm okay with occasional callbacks (which there hasn't been much of for ATLA) and cameos from older characters, but not when they take away the focus from the new ones, and Bryke are damn smart enough to know that is exactly what will happen. Even all of Toph's lines and where she was found basically rung of "REMEMBER ATLA GUYS??". For a show that has been all about how you do not have to live up the legacy of your predecessors and you are your own person, they can't seem to let go of ATLA.

It's not really a HUGE deal, and I can't expect people to not be excited to see their faves from ATLA, but it is kind of annoying and just feels like to me that Bryke is catering to the people who were going, "but I watch The Legend of Korra for the gaang!". Shit at this point I wouldn't be surprised if Aang wasn't actually dead and Korra's life has been one elaborate ruse.

Of course I'm going to wait to pass further judgment on Toph, because Zuko and Katara have barely played a part in the series and that's how I like it. If Toph helps Korra and then burrows her way back into the earth never to be seen again, I'll be somewhat at peace with it.

it's not exactly hard to figure out why they're putting toph in here

korra feels kind of weak, feels like she's missing essential parts of herself

toph is toph

normally im against constant callbacks to the original show and i agree that it is a bit hamhanded but toph makes sense as a part of this character arc.

Not to mention it'll probably play into the eventual Korra/Kuvira fight (which everyone's assuming will happen). Kuvira blinds Korra, Korra is able to counter it by using the same kind of earthbending sight that Toph has.

And how is Toph's appearance taking attention away from Korra? Toph was there for, like, ten seconds. The entire goddamn episode was about Korra. In fact, she's getting some long overdue character development.

It's not the show doing it, it's the fandom and Bryke being completely aware that a returning ATLA character is going to easily overshadow the rest of the episode that they appear in. And like I said I know it's dumb to expect Toph fans to not be excited to see her, especially since up until book 3 they were lead to believe she was dead. My problem is Bryke has been so adamant about LOK being different from ATLA and Korra not being Aang 2.0 but then they go and do something like this.

At the most I can say right now though is I'm a bit disappointed, I'm not breathing fire over it.

Well, I mean, Bryke's probably aware of that, but why make a sequel if you aren't allowed to use elements of the show that you're making a sequel to? It makes sense for Toph to still be alive and it makes sense for her to be used a bit.

If she becomes a major recurring character and has multiple fight scenes then sure, be disappointed, but if she just pops up for a couple of episodes and then goes away there's no problem whatsoever. If anything, with proper writing, her appearance could be used to reinforce what Bryke was saying.

Nooooot the best example to draw from considering both are notorious for over-using cheap references.

And over-exposing the popular characters, come to think of it.

okay point

but it's the only canon i can think of that would have similar outrage for a 10 second cameo.

If it was really similar then you would have a CGI Toph edited into the previous season.

Or Korra discovering a cloning facility with several million clone Tophs.
