Is there a good place to test-drive villains besides the usual places (e.g. dear_mun, bakerstreet memes) that you feel help you really figure out a villain's nuances? As someone looking to play a subtle villain who hams up everything except the extent of his villainy (he's a bit over-the-top in a lot of avenues of his life, but what he's planning/has intended for his target is not one of them), I'm kind of in need of tips. This is mostly because he would already know what's an effective strategy for him and wouldn't possibly do something early on that would fuck him over later (which I very much oocly have the possibility to do at being new to the character).

TL;DR: how does subtle villainy.

i used RP friends to play my villain off of. basically set something up where i could practice the subtle evil. one of the guys i play is almost exactly what you describe. i practiced the art of concealment of plans and misdirection with a friend in a one on one thing.

some general advice beyond practice is it is okay to fuck up. sometimes that fuck up you can salvage into a better plan for you guy and be all i meant to do that.

Of course, communication OOCly with your guy's target is also good. if you ask, some players will just tell you the best way to get under their character's skin and how your guy can find out about it. i was lucky and got some really great people to play with who told me the kinds of things that would work that he could figure out on his own even if I couldn't.
