it's part for the voice/videochat (i know my ex used to get her sabbath blessings from her parents over the video and stuff like that, and a friend has done hypnosis kink with me over the videochat, to give two examples)

and then it's partially for the messaging, which keeps logs even when you're not online, which AIM and IRC do not.

you can't scroll back through group chats that weren't online for in IRC or AIM, as far as I know

aim saves chat logs and you can look at them offline tho. they're just saved as a text file on your computer.

Skype retains logs of group chats that occur regardless of if you currently have Skype open. So every time I open skype, I get a few hundred messages from the group chats I am in from the past few days to months (I do not use skype very often). This does not happen in AIM or IRC, making being online at the same time as other users required for planning in groups.

Obviously AIM and IRC keep logs, but only of the stuff your computer receives while the program is open.
