This is something you're going to hear ridiculously fierce debate over because of translation differences and word of god vs. what we actually see in game. Atlus has outright admitted that they made Kanji's sexuality 'more subtle' for the American release. On the other hand, Troy Baker (Kanji's VA) has also gone on record saying that he was straight out told 'Kanji is gay' when he was being given stage directions for how to voice him.

As for what's shown in the game... obviously, it's not so clear. Personally I see Kanji as a bisexual with (perhaps) a preference for men, because that's how his read to me. But I've seen arguments for totally gay, mostly gay, mostly straight, and even one person who insisted that Kanji was completely straight and had no interest in men whatsoever.

And unfortunately, his initial attraction to Naoto doesn't clear much up either, since you'll find plenty of arguments that it 'doesn't count' because Naoto is actually a woman, even though he thought she was a man.

Anon above you (the one that reads him as pan): there's definitely a strong argument for him being bi (or pan, or whatever) rather than straight. Like, okay, Naoto makes a very pretty boy but the important thing to remember is that he thought she was male until proven otherwise and he liked her anyway. He didn't seem disgusted with himself for feeling attracted to her so much as confused. If it were really a big deal to him he would've responded with irritation and anger, not acting like he has a big dumb crush every time she walked into his vicinity. He only responds to people questioning his sexuality with aggressive denial because it's always (iirc) done in a negative way. If there wasn't a stigma and certain assumptions made about people that are attracted to men I really don't think he would make so much noise about NO REALLY GUYS I'M TOTALLY 100% STRAIGHT. It all ties into his rejection issues.

it's up in the air whether he's gay or bi or whatever but he definitely isn't straight. there's no way you can argue that when canon shows that he's attracted to naoto when he thinks she's a dude.
