production/concept artist

(Anonymous) 2014-06-22 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
i do production and concept work for a mobile app developer. i've also worked for a virtual pet site, done concept art for a video game, and had a brief horrible stint where i was 100% dependent on doing fanart commissions.

gonna warn you now that my experience has been ridiculously nonstandard so i can't give any "how to get a job/succeed as an artist" advice, i'm sorry!

that's so cool! i'm in art school and despairing of the job market so it's always good to hear that some people succeed. i've done some VPS work too but nothing big.

- what's been your favourite thing to work on?
- how much control over the design have you had/vs. what an art director tells you?
- what is the freakiest fandom commission you've done (i'm trying to make spare cash drawing weird weird porn right now so no judgment)

- i was part of a mobile advertising pitch that unfortunately didn't make it past the planning stages, but it was the most creative control i've had on a project and it was really fun! normally i work with already-established ideas, but on this one i got to come up with a storyline and characters and do a little comic about them for the pitch. it was pretty close to what i wanted my job to be when i was nine, lol

- it depends! we mostly do advertising and tie-in apps, so we have to sit down and hammer out a lot of the details before i actually start drawing. usually my boss or the client already has some idea, and sometimes they want something very specific (and once i got handed a photomanip and got told "do this, but drawn", which was surreal), but i usually have a fair amount of input.

- eh nothing too freaky, i didn't do hardcore porn so i guess the freakiest was a vocaloid character being hypnotized into spreading her legs. i was also asked if i would draw a gore-covered my little pony wearing a giant strap-on (this was back before bronies were really known as a thing so it was extra weird to me) but i just said i wasn't comfortable with that and they took it well.

You probably can't say what game it was specifically, but was the game anything well known? What sort of things did you do concept art for - locations, characters, monsters, whatever - and did any of it make it into the final product wholly or mostly unchanged?

it was an educational game designed to teach basic words and grammar, so...probably not anything anyone here has heard of, lol. we've been getting some big companies interested in us lately though; i'm on something right now that's a tie-in for an upcoming movie and i am super excited, but i can't say anything and it's like torture. we got a bunch of inside info and i know all this juicy stuff and i can't geek out about it with anyone! >:(

i've come pretty close to being on some big stuff but this is the first time it seems like it'll actually go through (oh, the world of app development). i was on a pitch last year for a fifa tie-in kids' game that fell through, at the time i had no idea what fifa is cause i don't follow sports, so it's been weird seeing it everywhere now. (mostly i just remember thinking their mascot was hideous and deliberately drawing it cuter.) and i almost got to be on a mobile game for frozen, we were all set to start when they suddenly pulled out, and i'm still mad because 1) i could've put disney on my resume and 2) doing a disney princess game would've been a childhood dream fulfilled. hopefully this current project will satisfy my inner eight-year-old.

i usually do kinda...technical, i guess? concepts, more stuff like general look/feel and how features work than characters and monsters, although i've done a few of those too. (the concept i did for the game that got released was the combat system and a couple of very early hero and monster concepts, back when the client wanted it extremely anime. it's probably a good thing they didn't get used because someone said my hero looked like a final fantasy gary oak and i've never been able to unsee it.)

in general a lot of my concepts aren't directly visible in the final product, because they're mostly done in the pitch and early planning stages, but occasionally they get through and that's always cool! plus i get licensing pay if they use my art or something directly based off of it. :D (my boss is talking about using some of my art directly in the super-cool project we're on now and oh my god i really wish i could just tell everyone how awesome this is arrrrrrgh)

okay my description of the game sounds bizarre (why yes, i did the combat system for an educational word game) so let me clarify that it's one of those 'pick the right word/phrase to defeat the monster' things, like those typing games where you have to spell the words right to kill zombies or something. i helped make learning cool!

actual sperg
