Shut up

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Man/Woman With No Name characters

How do you handle a character with no canon name? Either the kind where "well obviously they must have a name, it's just not mentioned because storytelling cleverness or whatever", or the fact that the character never got a proper name is part of their story.

I'm thinking about apping a character of the latter sort and submitting the app as "The Narrator of [book]", and maybe having them pick a name be part of their first interactions in the game. Seem legit?

p.s.

(and no, it's not the narrator from Fight Club, in case you're wondering)

I've got a character who logically must have a name, but is only ever referred to by title in canon. I gave him a name based on a combination of his probable ethnicity and thematically appropriate meaning, but almost a year in, only like three people in game have learned his fanon name, he still mostly uses the title.

Basically, if you have something in-verse that works to call them, use that the way they use it, but if they should have a name then you've just got to pick one.

Depends I guess on why the character doesn't have a name. I have the same trouble with this guy, he states at the beginning of the game that his name "isn't important" and is referred to as "you" for the rest of the game, even in menu screens. I thought for a while about picking a name for him, but ultimately I decided if I was ever playing him in a game he'd probably still think his name was unimportant and decline to have one. If other characters were to force a name on him, he'd probably let them pick something and roll with it.

I have no idea what I would do in like, CDC though, where you're forced to have a name as part of an email address. I think if a character never ever GOT a name in his life and he doesn't have any hang-ups about getting one, having him pick one at the start is a good idea.
