i assume it's because he played a double agent for a good number of years, which involved outright lying to the faces of dozens of people, plenty of whom were nasty, dangerous people who would have tortured and killed him if they found out what he was doing

i mean i'm not a Snape stan or anything but i do think he was pretty brave in that sense. petty, vindictive, mean and pathetic for sure, but it would take guts to lie right to Voldemort's freaky snake face
