Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

Anything you've got, honestly. I want to try her out but MCU is a bit intimidating.

The MCU tie-in comic's shitty, so if you read that dampen your expectations ahead of time. Some comics add valuable insight into the characters. Natasha got a shitty one. And speaking of comics, MCU isn't 616 so don't feel like you need to read the 616 comics to understand her in the MCU. (Although The Name of the Rose is good so I'd rec it anyway, but less because of valuable MCU insight and more it's a Natasha being badass.)

And I'd argue...

Iron Man 2's pretty much Natasha working undercover and probably the best example you'll get of her being undercover for a long period of time. Avengers is her on the job, but not undercover: she's an agent of SHIELD and has shit that needs doing. And Cap 2 is currently the closest you'll get to how she behaves when she's not on the clock.

Certain traits remain consistent throughout all three incarnations. Certain traits don't. She's a great deal more flirty in Iron Man 2 than she is in any other movie, as an example. (And on that note she'll change her persona based upon the job she's got, so IM2 isn't just the default undercover template for Natasha. Just an example of how she'd bend based upon the demands of the role.)

on the tie-in comic. it's sexismalicious, at least the art. give it a fucking skip. (name of the rose is a great read though, would also rec though not in a "use for mcu characterisation" way bc fuck yeah marjorie liu)

I think Natasha's line about being different things to different people is really important to keep in mind.

Ignore the first anon. MCU Natasha =/= comics Natasha. Don't.

Reading comprehension is a valuable skill, anon.

as someone not familiar with 616 Natasha, what are the major differences, just out of curiosity?

The main one is that 616 Natasha was born in (according to Marvel's wiki) 1928 and MCU Natasha was born in 1984 according to Cap 2, barring possible future events which retcon that in some fashion. Everything else...yeah, they've played coy with MCU Natasha's history so the degree to which there's similarities is to be determined, but it's the difference between being 86 and 30.

There's other stuff too, like how 616 Natasha and 616 Winter Soldier have this history together as star-crossed brainwashed Russian spies whereas the extent of their interactions in Cap 2 was basically, "Who's this douchebag?" And I guess to be fair it's hypothetically possible that they have this intense history and they'll reveal it in a future movie, but the impression I got was that they were strangers. Mileage varies. I could go on, but I think the age difference really says it all.
