Thinking about apping next cycle. Can people tell me how the pacing is, the atmosphere, what kinds of characters work best, etc.?

It's described as a slow-burn kind of game. That's become pretty accurate. It's not a fast paced game at all. Right now the atmosphere is kind of stiff and that's because the current event is kind of cumbersome, which has left most people just sort of twiddling their thumbs.

The game is very much something where you sort of have to prepared to make your own plots. It's got a very wide open map with lots of places to go, but with long distances between them. For instance, it's broken up into two main castles that it takes two months to walk between. From what I've gathered from one of the mods, it's not the kind of game you can really expect too much mod direction from. Basically we're given a lot of room to just do stuff.

The atmosphere is pleasant enough. I haven't had a hard time with CR, whether in my cast or outside. I've seen others say otherwise, but I can't speak for that experience. Most people are pretty friendly. The mods are a little distant in their official capacity, but are decent enough when I've seen them chattering on other people's plurks. Right now they don't seem to have a lot of free time, so that's having a noticeable effect right now.

Characters that are from fantasy/period settings are going to have the easiest time, to be sure. But modern characters can work just as well, too. We have some neat examples of that with characters like House and the Terminator who are very interesting in that they are outside the general character spectrum of the game, but seem to be doing well enough regardless. Because of the long travel times, it may bear some thinking on what you might do if your character isn't the type to hop on a horse and go exploring. There's opportunities for your characters to get stranded in other places, but it may prove initially difficult and boring if you find your character stuck at their castle and not going out and doing much.

tl;dr - the game has a lot of potential if you put some effort and creativity into it. The current event and time of year (finals!!) has currently slowed the game down to a snail's pace, but if it picks up again, it has plenty of potential as a wide open sandbox to run your own plots and storylines.

+1 to all of that

It is definitely a game that doesn't hold your hand. There are events and seems like opportunity to expand/ explore the world, but be prepared for slower build up. I personally like it. I feel like you do need to know what you're doing or have some sort of plan with your character though. Random apps may not work so well (although the character I apped was one that was partially a whim. I just thought of her and was like "she would be perfect here", and then had all sorts of ideas with what to do with her.)

I've heard people say they had a hard time with cr, but I'm the type to tag out so even though I only knew maybe one or two people from other games, I've had no trouble with getting some really good cr.

All in all, it's a great game that allows for a lot of development and growth if you're willing to put the time and energy. But it's up to you if you want that.

Cr is harder to get if you play an animu. There's a big medium divide in this game. If you don't believe me, check out the test drive meme.

I have no problem playing with anime characters (given that's what I normally play), I've just been busy with finals and so focusing mainly on things with my own cast in the time I have for rp. I obviously can't speak for everyone else in the game, so maybe there is a medium divide I just haven't noticed, but I'll make sure to tag around more once I have some spare time!

Just like it's harder for live action/western media to get CR in games mostly full of animu (if you aren't playing currently very popular characters like MCU, Batman, Adventure Time, Twilight, whatever). Test drives aren't indicative of a game and just because you can post and expect everyone to come to you elsewhere doesn't mean anything. People are drawn to what they know no matter what kind of post is up.

If you tag out, you WILL get CR. It just depends on who you tag out too. Are you doing the typical weeaboo tagging out where YOU only tag the most popular live action and western media that you're familiar with? Surprise, double standard. You also have to take into account that most people who play those characters (Batman, Captain America, Hawkeye, etc) are the sort of people who are in it for attention and do circlejerk, flake out, and tag people who are already their friends.

I know it sucks having to work for CR but it'll come to you if you do and you aren't an entitled little babby going WEH WEH NO ONE LIKES MY ANIMUS THERE'S A MEDIUM DIVIDE. Because guess what? As someone that plays primarily from western media (video game, live action) I'm going to avoid ANYONE like that. Even if I'm playing anime and you're playing anime, if I see you stepping around trying to imply there's a medium divide and THAT'S why you're unhappy/not getting CR/whatever? I'm going to avoid you, too.

yeah that entire comment reeked of WHY WON'T THE ANIMUS LET ME IN THEIR SANDBOX butthurt glad i wasn't the only one who picked up on that

also calling bullshit on la players having a hard time getting cr in games full of animu probably because those mythical games don't exist to my knowledge, and even if they did, animu players have been way way more open in my experience tagging across the medium divide than their la counterparts.

and before i get accused of bias, i play from both sides of it. the pretty white people brigade is generally worse, every time.

it depends on the game, tbh. i've seen animu leaning games that are really welcoming and where there's no medium divide, but i've also seen the reverse.

it's a lot to do with preference and whatnot. look at any sex game, for instance. how many times have animu/vidya/manga characters outright stated that they 'can't smut with live action players because eww creepy real face'? i'm not bashing on that decision, it's up to them, but when the theme of the game being cut off because of those preferences, it can seem like yes, there's a medium divide.

not to say that la players don't do the same thing sometimes with 'they all look like children/girls'. it's not one sided.

that's funny because in my experience (generally speaking; i am not in this game), it's the anime players who are the worst at only tagging their friends/their cliques or flaking and dropping threads with everyone but their cliques. LA players have been more willing to backtag and tag out to those not in their medium.

it's almost like... everyone's experience is unique!!!! wow.
