i like the party in xillia for the same reasons, but also because, they aren't forced to stick together? alvin is always off on his own, rowen and elize part ways for a brief time, and we don't even meet leia until hours into the game. and when they find a reason to reunite and stay together, it's for believable reasons (most especially for rowen, because tales hasn't been so great on giving reasons to the older characters to hang out with a bunch of kids. looking at you graces).

and just to cover my tracks, believable =/= relatable

I always thought Malik stayed with them because he was Asbel's teacher/captain/whatever and wanted to protect him?

yeah, at the beginning, and that part i won't argue. i think it's good he stayed and kept an eye on asbel. the more the game went on though, it felt kinda forced to me. i guess i can say the same of pascal actually. her and malik's motivations to stay with the party and accomplish the objectives just...idk weren't so clear to me. but unlike malik, pascal was actually useful in terms of having relevant knowledge and technological skills no one else had but needed. malik helped them in fendel but that's about it.

Let's not sugarcoat it, anon: Pascal was a plot device.

Need to dispense valuable backstory information that no other party member should know? Pascal knows it.

Need a way to infiltrate a city? Pascal knows a back door.

Time to get an airship? Pascal knows where you can find one.

And so on.

there's always one. rita gets the same schtick in vesperia. without the "smart" character (or the protag/main female with special snowflae powers) there would literally be no way of beating the game.

yep basically. like i said, at least she was useful. malik, not so much.

Malik was hella fun to play in battle though.

i have to admit, he surprised me with being a mage! i liked having him in the party too.

that and he's a member of the windor knights and it's windor's king who's out there rampaging around and causing chaos. even if he didn't have a personal reason to stay, it would be in the best interests of his country to go try to stop it.
