Oh beautiful, for spacious posts

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

IMO, the geek subculture has provided a somewhat-safe space for many men who have been snubbed by the rest of society, where they are not expected to prove their value to each other by carving notches in a bedpost or exemplifying traditional masculine traits. The increase in mainstream appeal and female participation over the past decade or so threatens the safety and exclusivity of this space, and the backlash from male geeks is a somewhat-predictable response to the invasion of their space.

no one cares about tumblr copypaste so STOP

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
no, this is MensRights reddit copypaste

op needs to get better taste

also the quote is wrong. male-dominated geek spaces are all about proving their value to each other by point-scoring and pedantry. they just lash out more at women

oh my God

the idiot that wrote this has NO IDEA what 'geek subculture' is like from an inside perspective

it's a horrible, vicious place

especially the parts predominantly inhabited by men. geek girl subculture is evil too (see: DWRP) but we're generally less homophobic and shit compared to male-dominated geek cultures

are you kidding

do i have to drop the grenade that is f/f and m/m wank

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
well...yeah

what i meant though is that it's on average a more hospitable place for gay nerds. dwrp is overflowing with self-identified lesbians and bisexual people. being gay in a male dominated geek subculture is just as bad as being gay in generalized straight society. the op's comment is trying to spin male geek subculture like it's some subversive safe-haven for outcasts that don't fit traditional roles when...it's not

male geek subculture is aggressive because it's filled with vicious no-life assholes, not because they feel their "safe place" is being "threatened". that "safe place" does not exist

"self-identified" lesbians and bisexuals? you do realize that the only legit identification of anyone's sexuality is going to be self-identified, right? i'm used to hearing that terminology attached to religious groups people want to marginalize, not sexual preferences.
