running on mobile wifi so i'll see what i can round up atm, it's been a year or so since i watched most of the spin-offs so forgive me if you end up watching them and i totally get things mixed up and what not, but you don't really need to worry about continuity in general. if you really like a specific reincarnation of harlock (cosmo warrior, original 70's, arcadia of my youth/ssx, endless odyssey, galaxy express, gun frontier, etc) just stick with that particular canon if you plan on playing him somewhere. basically they're all canon aus of the same person with (roughly) the same backstory.

also if there's a full length anime series then chances are you don't really need to care about reading the manga it's based off of, since it's more or less the same and scanlations are very hard to come by.

space pirate captain harlock ( 42 eps and fully subbed on hulu )
essentially where it all starts! post apocalyptic world, harlock and his crew are outlaws, etc. harlock occasionally touches ground to check up on his goddaughter, mayu, and eventually save earth from advance space race of hot babes! the antagonist and her armada are very well written and so on (basically leiji wrote ahead of his time and it shows in all of his series and spinoffs A+++ would rewatch again). introduces angsty teen, tadashi daiba, into the mix. (daiba was replaced by that weird yama/logan dude that doesnt... make.. sense...)

arcadia of my youth & arcadia of my youth: endless orbit ssx ( torrents are floating around. your best bet is bakabt! )
arcadia of my youth is set in another universe altogether and shows the origin story of This harlock. This harlock had a wife, had rank in the Enemy's army, his bond with tochiro basically goes assassin's creed tracing back to genetics and whatnot. it's great. endless orbit ssx is a continuation from that, goes into his recent adventures but it suffered from low ratings. eventually it was given a rush ending at episode 22 out of a 24/26 ep cour. there are good fansubs of the movie and the series out!

buddy comedy western wild wild west au. full of derp shenanigans and really lewd humor HAHHA

cosmo warrior zero ( 15 eps fansubbed unsure if it's on hulu )
ok CMZ is a definite fan favorite. when harlock isn't a brooding byronic hero, he's a hotblooded shounen mofo and this is his series. it's so camp and full of shenanigans and it just works. do give it a shot if you're tired of watching harlock mouthbreathe into his wine. i can assure you it won't disappoint.

harlock saga ( 6 eps not worth it imo )
basically harlock meets das rheingold. it's pointless, you get nothing from it. i accidentaly bought it on dvd thinking it was awesome. it wasnt.

the endless odyssey ( 13 eps fansubbed and dubbed )
ok this is a hit-or-miss. this is leiji matsumoto going 'im not sure if i want this to be a retelling of the original series, a sequel, or another continuity altogether. oh. let's just make it all three at once' and then he dropped from the project because one of his directors put a star of david in one scene and leiji went DIRECT TO VIDEO GET IT OUT OF MY FACE. endless odyssey is one giant confusing mess, but some elements are lifted from it and are essentially put into the cgi movie. it's awful, but the animation is too good. this series manages to make harlock boring as hell, he literally mouthbreathes and stares at nothing for long periods of time. we just dont know

galaxy express 999 ( 113 eps, 2 movies, and 10000 spin offs )
another example of how leiji doesnt care about continuity. ge9 is set in the future where humans basically have reached pseudo immortality by putting their brains in robot bodies. follows the story of maetel and tetsuro and how the former shows the latter that getting a robot body isn't all that great. it's TRC meets space opera, traveling to different worlds via a train. harlock and his equally badass fem counterpart, emeraldas, occasionally make cameos in the 113 ep anime series. however they do have much bigger roles in the movies and spin-offs. give the films: Bonjour Galaxy Express 999 and Adieu Galaxy Express 999 a shot.

harlock shows up in other 999 spin offs but these are a handful to start off with. i suggest you begin with the original 70's series and branch off from there! hope it helped or got you interested, haha, and sorry for the non-serious summaries. if you do end up playing harlock somewhere i can unearth my emeraldas voice and happily thread with you!

anytime! it's great to see someone interested in leijiworks in general, haha. keep in mind that most of the harlock series follows a pattern of: harlock and tochiro being bffs4lyfe, tochiro usually dies before the start of the series, his conscious becomes the arcadia, harlock becomes a brooding protagonist but keeps to his promise with tochiro. daiba is the hot-headed shounen protag that tags along and harlock needs to show him the ropes to become his own definition of what Man is or something inspiring, along those lines.
