rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. Even if they were, they're a completely unnecessary workaround. Yamada's way of addressing people still stands out enough as is even without any extra nicknames.

I'd guess that it's because those names are more difficult to pronounce, but that doesn't really explain why they gave Asahina a nickname based on her surname when her first name is already short, fairly easy to pronounce, and they're all on first-name basis in the localization.

Probably because Aoi is actually kinda tricky to pronounce if not familiar with Japanese. So it probably was to make it easier on English speaking fans and also like to ensure the VAs had a consistent pronunciation of the name. That is one thing I'll definitely give the actors in this, all of them actually pronounced the names and terms in the same way rather than in some games where you'll have multiple pronunciations of a name or term.
