Because it's the start of a completely different franchise.

I mean, let's take your logic to its most extreme end. Both Marvel and DC Comics feature spandexed superheroes who have extraordinary powers and abilities. Would you really try to lump them both together? Have Comics -> Marvel/DC Comics -> Animated/Live Action/Actual Cartoons?

I think it's a little early to say that, and didn't Marvel and DC start off as different companies? Which isn't the case with BD, which went to "spirutal successor to FF4HoL" from "sequel to 4HoL" in development anyhow.

I mean if Bravely Default ditches the FF job classes and goes off in a totally new direction, sure. But the first game is still "modern take on FF crystal job classy tale only we aren't actually calling it FF" to me. (So far. I mean, I'm in chapter 3 so I shouldn't even be here for spoilers.)

No, they've already made a web game and they're working on a direct sequel, so it's the start of a franchise. This isn't opinion, it's a fact that they've decided to turn it into multiple games, with the 3DS games following the adventures of Tiz.

Well okay, but I'm still going to call it an FF subseries as long as they have spell fencers, elemental crystals, and ra/ga/ja spell names. Sounds a bit like what they've done with their Ivalice Alliance and Crystal Chronicles series.

Your opinion has been duly noted and written off.

ra/ga/ja spell names

lots of rpgs use those names...

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
i cant think of a one that uses it besides FF

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
phantasy star

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Phantasy Star uses Gi/Na from what some quick googling tells me?

Ra* as well.

Probably not a bad marketing decision to take off the FF, though, given how little the western market cares at all about FF gaiden series like CC and Tactics and even BD's blueprint game, 4HoL. BD's got a lot more attention than those ones did. (Which is sad, because the gaiden series are great.)

I think once some of those sequels come out, though, people will be less "this isn't FF! it's new! new off of an homage to FF classic and different!! by taking from FF classic and tweaking it and BETTER!!!" and start complaining about it the same way they do KH and VII compilation and Fabulous Nova Crystals. That's the part I find so silly.

why are you so buttmad about this?

Re: sa

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
Actually I thought it was neat that for once people are getting into an FF gaiden series so I was confused. I didn't realize that people are so invested in this game NOT BEING FINAL FANTASY!!! enough to write off that it was originally developed as a sequel to an FF game, has most of the major bosses from that FF game as bonus bosses, takes every worldbuilding and gameplay element from FF, has planned crossovers to FFXIV, is officially recognized as a subseries of FF, was created as yet another homage to early FF, and which had the initials "FF" in the Japanese version to remind fans that it was FF. I'm not denying they're making a franchise out if it (again, like Crystal Chronicles, VII / XIII comp, etc) but it's like saying Chocobo's Dungeon is a completely independent franchise that is seriously definitely not FF at all.

But yeah, it doesn't hurt me any that you're so adamant about it. Go ahead, the earth is flat and you're not tainted by association with FF by enjoying BD.

So you're basically admitting you're strawmanning. Who even cares that much either way, but officially it's considered a FF spinoff.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC_vs._Marvel

Brought them up for a reason, anon, and that reason is that they've had a number of official crossovers tying the two universes together. But if what you say is true about BD being officially a FF spinoff, sure, shove them together.
