What the heckie?

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

Question: I'm thinking about picking up the female protagonist from Persona 3 Portable. However, I'm not attached to the name "Minako", the common and unofficial fandom name for her.

Is it a Big Deal if I go around calling her something else, as long as I stick to her canon characterisation? (Or rather, as close to canon as you can get for a blank slate protagonist with multiple-choice personalities.)

I doubt anyone would mind. I know for certain people have gone with other names for her in RP, and if anyone's objected, it'd be the first I've heard of it.

Japanese fans call her Hamuko, if that suits you better. You could probably get away with that one at least.

"Get away with"?

It's that kind of language that makes me worry about an original name.

Um, I think you're reading a little too much into it. I wasn't stating any personal preference of mine, I just know what you mean since there's lots of name wank with the P4 protagonist.

Oh, I'm sorry.

I'm just worried about it, that's all.

Actually, they usually use Hamuko for general/humourous use. I also saw some fanworks using Kimiko, usually if they're more serious in tone.

Chiming in to echo that nah, there is no canon name, so just call her whatever you want! The only two protags who have game canon names are Tatsuya Suou and Maya Amano from Persona 2 IS and EP respectively. The other four, (P1, P3 M & F, P4) have interchanging names. In the game books, they are listed as Hero/Player/You. Even P4's Golden book has this and that came out after Arena and the anime and both of those had called him Yu. Here's the Female Player's page from the P3P fanbook.

From what I understand, whoever is making the spinoff game/product/anime gets to name the protagonist (it has to be approved by Atlus too), so that's why while Yu Narukami has been used in most of the materials apart from the manga, the male P3 protagonist has had different ones for each (Minato in the manga, Sakuya in the stage play, Makoto in the movie, and then back to Minato in Persona Q). It really depends on the director/mangaka/theater producer's choice.

I know I wouldn't have a problem with you calling her something else. I've avoided referring to the P3 protagonist by name simply because of this.
