What the heckie?

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

"Plus, do you run around interrogating every trans person you meet about their level of dysphoria and do they really feel like an X trapped in a Y's body?"

this line feels really defensive and unnecessary because it's irrelevant to the situation at hand. the series pretty clearly demonstrates Nuriko's reasons for living and presenting as another gender and they have zero to do with their own identity, and furthermore your statement about questioning how they managed to do that and not experience identity confusion is really hypocritical in the context of the afore-quoted statement.

something about these character trans debates that always bugs me is that the people arguing in favor of trans interpretations tend to lack any respect for self-identification. you're right, ayrt doesn't get to say whether or not the character has anything to do with trans issues. the canon did that for them. and furthermore, you don't get that right either on the opposite end.

as for thread op, just stick with what's canon and what gender/identity Nuriko is presenting as given the canonpoint you're taking them from and throw up a permissions/opt-out post in case someone's not comfortable tagging a character like them. Real Simple Stuff.

Oh Gods, THIS. It really bothers me too, since lots of the people who argue for "THIS CHARA IS TRANS*" come off as not only overdefensive, but really disrespectful since they slap "TRANS*" labels on characters and, if proved wrong, they throw super entitled tantrums and insist on using the same labels despite how the chara does NOT identify in that way. For people who are so about RESPECT IDENTIFICATION AND IDENTITIES, they throw that outta the window when it doesn't fit THEIR own standards and stuff.

(See Chihiro from Dangan Ronpa: he identifies as a guy, canon in clear on that, and yet defensive "CHIHIRO IS A GIRL" fans get so wrapped in their stuff that they've come come to the extreme of harrassing the Japanese transwoman who explained why Chihiro isn't trans* and forcing her to leave tumblr due to all the transphobic/sexist/racist bullying they subjected her to. Respect of trans* issues, my ass.)

I did not say Nuriko is trans. I said Nuriko's plot touches on trans issues. The two are different.

How would you suggest someone play a male-bodied character who, depending on canonpoint, may or may not be living and identifying as a woman without touching on the issue of people IRL who live and identify as a gender they were not born into?

I'm guessing you didn't keep reading after deciding to respond with misplaced indignation. And no, Nuriko's plot does not touch on trans issues because Nuriko's presentation as another gender has zero to do with their own identity, and in case you missed it, that's generally the center of trans issues. Self identification. Learn it. Respect it. Real Simple Stuff.
