Man, the number of people screeching about how Ellie and Riley AREN'T lesbians, they're JUST FRIENDS, is amazing.

I have. They try to argue that, no, the director means that it was RILEY and that it would not have mattered, and of course, these girls live in a post-apocalyptic world, they need to get it where they can!!!!

It's a lot of stretching because the idea of Ellie liking girls really bothers a lot of people, it seems.

Why does it matter is the real question?

So Ellie is gay. So what? Her sexuality doesn't suddenly define her character.

No, but representation is important.

As the other anon said. It's nice that she's a lesbian BECAUSE it doesn't define her character--she's not fap fodder or just a token character. She's a rounded character who happens to be a lesbian.

But, blah blah, lesbians are gross, blah blah, homophobic comments.

and who says she's necessarily gay anyway? she could also be bi unless she comes out and says that she only likes girls. there's nothing stopping people from also shipping her with a boy in rp if they want to.

I don't think Ellie's sexuality really matters, because she's not defined by it. She's a great character who happened to fall in love and they told the story in a touching, respectful, non-objectifying way, between two characters with a lot of chemistry and attachment to each other.

I've only seen this in the abyss of YouTube comments. The actual fandom (graphic makers, rpers, fic writers, 99% of the tumblr tag) seem to have glued their shipping goggles on with liquid concrete and have embraced it.

I've had different experiences off of YT and Tumblr, unfortunately, including a few people I have since dropped from my plurklist throwing a fit.
