ESL speaker here, agreeing with something someone said further up: IT's easy to get it mixed up when, for instance, your school English has been mostly British but a lot of the media exposure etc. has been American. However, I try to keep it straight and encourage people to correct me.

But I've got to mention at this point that the way many English-speakers write ESL characters is just plain ridiculous. I chuckle whenever I see 'Fraulein' and so on. I know it's often that way in canon, but that doesn't make it less weird, really.
