there were some cool people around on LJ

and then there were the middle-aged housewife fans who banned slash on the community because it wasn't family-friendly enough for their light comedy show about POWs killing nazis (all the fanfic on the comm was already DARKER! AND! EDGIER! than the show) and deleted+banned anyone who was like "hey wait"

oh god I had forgotten that clusterfuck

I was actually fandom friends with some of the people involved until that whole thing, but I'd been gradually reexamining my upbringing & realizing how bigoted and shitty it was and

idk dumb as it sounds watching people get treated like shit for writing slash about Hogan's Heroes was kind of what made me look at my life, look at my choices, and I cut ties and changed my entire outlook on life after that

so I guess some good came of it maybe

no that is definitely some good :) i don't think it matters where your inspiration to change for the better comes from!

if me being banned for getting mad about slash helps you become a better person, then let me be banned a thousand times, and let my butt get super-flustered about slash forever, because it'll be worth it to help someone grow
