Kinda inspired by the "WHERE YOU LIVE" thread, I was wondering if any of you have ever met people from online? Feel free to reply logged in or not. I don't care, I'm just curious.

once! it was an old girlfriend and i was vacationing in her state. we went on a date to an art museum and it was actually really fun.

other than that, everyone lives north and none of them want to come south -- and i don't have money to go visit them.

I've visited and been visited by my long-distance girlfriend I met through RP and both times were absolutely amazing. c:

I've also been visited by another RP partner and close friend and we had a whirlwind week of sightseeing which was totally awesome and huge amounts of fun.

it was a terrible idea, would not recommend, 0/10

Yeah, I've met a lot of friends online and moved to hanging out with them IRL when and if we're in the same area. Generally good experiences.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
several times, and i guess i pick my online friends well because i've never had a bad experience! some of the most fun times were even the rp game meetups at the bigger conventions.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
i have met several of my RP friends. one of them is even in another country, so that was a treat. it's always been lovely to meet them actually, i haven't had a bad encounter with it yet.

i once went to a game meet up which was a little awkward but i met a lot of the players whose characters i had close CR with and it was fun getting lunch with them and taking photos an dstuff.

I've met a number of people from online though none of them were from dreamwidth. I've met a few fellow roleplayers from yahoo!chat at anime cons when I was still into that stuff, and more recently (as in the last five years) I've met a number of people from WoW.

Overall, my opinion on meeting people online is pretty neutral, you can meet some really cool people but the weird ones are always really fucking out there. Also seemed like a lot of them had severe social anxiety so it was difficult to get them to do anything that they would enjoy, even having a conversation was difficult.

I've met up with a lot of people I met online when we were both going to be attending the same convention. Those were a lot of fun. I also once travelled to the next city over to meet up with someone I had known online for five years. That was absolutely awesome, though obviously how long we'd known each other was a huge factor there.

Overall, I definitely recommend it as long as you're sensible and not meeting up with people you've spoken to twice in a dark alley somewhere. If they're local, why not meet up with someone who shares a common interest?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, multiple times. most of the time it went well because we were rp friends who talked about a lot of non-rp things (a lot of fandom talk though) and most of the meetings were at anime cons.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
a long distance rp girlfriend came to visit me for a week, that was fun

i briefly met a gamemate who lives in the same city as me at a con, that was awkward

various people from a forum, ranging from awkward to fun

actually the weirdest bit was when i realized after meeting my friend's roommate that i'd once known him from a forum

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, once! it was back a solid six years or so ago, they happened to be in a city near mine so we went to the ren faire together. standard nerdiness.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
more than five. never had a bad experience. some "eh" ones but nothing worse so far, and one girl i really REALLY clicked with.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Quite a few people, actually! A good chunk of my old WoW guild camped out together for a week, once, and just last year I went on a road trip with an internet friend--who is now my meatspace bestie. My experiences have overall been good ones.

i've met a lot of people from online! i met one of my best irl friends through rp, but i also like casually meeting up with people i know from rp/fandom at anime conventions or at other nerdy local events like renfairs.

if you're going to meet up with someone who you don't know really well, make sure it's a situation where you both have a way out if it's not working. for instance, meeting up at a con is good. planning to spend a couple of hours together if you're going to be in the same city is good. but going to someone's house and crashing there for a week is bad. expecting to spend every waking moment together is bad.

a few since a lot of DWRPers seem to live in bc. a couple i ran into at a con (I DIDN'T REALIZE WHO THEY WERE UNTIL THEY TOLD ME how embarrassing on my part) and a few more i actively set up a meeting with. one of them was from edmonton and i took her sightseeing around vancouver, it was pretty great. the first one i met, we literally decided to meet each other after we rp'd for a couple of months and she found out i had a deviantart account. we've been friends ever since. it's been years, neither of us can believe it

one day i'll drag my ass down to sanfran to stay with my uncle and hang out with some friends i have in california too. >(

yep! when i've been in the area of friends, i've gone and met up with them. once was a pal from arizona years ago (we went for ice cream and just talked about our fandoms, it was pretty fun) and then three of my friends for one of my friends' birthdays about two years back?

yeah, i paid for an ex to visit me on my 21st birthday. worth every dime, even if we're not still together. it was a blast.

i've met two other friends as well, one was going to a concert in my city, and the other is just someone that lives an hour and a half away from me so we have sleepovers occasionally.

i'd kill to meet more people since all of those occasions have been some of the best times of my life. ever since i graduated and moved away from where i went to school friends have been near impossible to come by so i'm pretty much always by myself

Yeah! I made one friend who competed in the same type of dance as me (kind of obscure) on a sims forum when I was like 12 or 13. Since I was pretty young, my mom knew about it. She had known I had been talking to him over yahoo chat, but trusted him because we would discuss stuff about dance that was not easily found on the internet. We met at a dance competition about a year after we first started talking, and it was fun. Actually our moms ended up becoming pretty buddy-buddy haha. We met every few years after that when he was visiting family in the area, but haven't spoken much very recently besides the occasional comment or like on a facebook status.

I also met some people from my LJRP game a few years back, but I had just graduate high school and they were in their early twenties so it was a little awkward (I have since grown up to be significantly less socially stunted thankfully), but we had a pretty fun day hanging out and going to a museum. I think if I met them again now, it'd be a lot more entertaining.

I've met some dudes from OkCupid. None have been too creepy. Mostly they just have no personality but still like to talk about themselves a lot.

I would totally meet someone from online again in the future. Maybe not OkCupid because I've given up on that site, but there's a few people on my plurk list now that I think would be fun to hang out with in real life.

My current roommates are people I met online. I've met a couple others too!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-27 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
met some pals off 4chan at an art festival. it was awesome. a few of them were awkward but that never bothered me.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-27 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
a few people! i had a long-distance relationship with a girl i went to visit a few times before she broke it off, and i went down to texas year before last to have thanksgiving with some good friends i'd never met irl.

i'm kind of hoping to get to an anime con two of my best friends are going to (one is coming from overseas!!! !!), but i work part-time at a grocery store... so i dunno if it'll happen.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-27 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Several! I've gone and visited two and lived with another for a few months (and we've visited a couple of times since). There's a couple others I'd love to go visit, but money, and I'm hoping to visit another soon! My first ever roommate was also someone I'd met online, in my pre-RPing days.

I've been really lucky, I've had nothing but great experiences.
