I was highly interested in doing this myself, however, Cyrus told Voile and Phoenix that the stone would only work in Kalos, so neither of them have bothered to even attempt to use it. But if it was something that worked in the academy, I'd love to dive into it.

...why wouldn't it work in the academy, considering all the other whacky a-wizard-did-it type transformations embraced? is there some kind of special game mechanic why it wouldn't (other than the bracelets i guess)...?

I think maybe an actual Modly type thing ought to happen as to Mega Evolutions so people know whether they can happen or not. In X/Y, there's a point where the Professor questions why it only seems to happen in Kalos, which might have been what Cyrus was referring to. But yeah with all the stuff that happens at the Academy, I don't personally see why it couldn't happen?

No longer in the game, but if I recall correctly the only reason it doesn't happen anywhere but Kalos is because Kalos is the only place that has Mega Stones and the Mega Rings/whatever. So if you took a Mega Ring and a Mega Stone out of Kalos and used them someplace else with the appropriate Pokemon it should work.

Yeah I feel like that was thrown in to try and explain why it's never been a thing or talked about before in any of the other previous Pokemon games.

I think it could easily be circumvented!

Professor Sycamore visits/is invited to the mysterious Smash Academy by Headmaster Hand to give a one-day seminar and drops off some rings to see if Mega Evolutions still work on Pokemon with human forms. Maybe something like that.

That would be pretty super sweet. Especially if it was played out and somebody NPCd or even apped the floopy haired dude.

I have no idea. I haven't finished the new game and I did look it up, but I haven't found anything claiming that the stones can't be used outside of the region. I'd love to see people referencing them and using them for creative and what not.
