Unfunny wanky stereotypes

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

FUNNY CHARACTERS PLAYED BADLY

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Having to be actually funny pops up all the time as a reason in Characters I'll Never Play threads, so what are some stories of people disregarding this and it turning out really, really badly? It sounds like it would be incredibly painful, given the average dwrper's idea of wit.

I guess this is one of the reasons "troll" characters have such a bad stigma against them.

Pretty much. There's a fine line between being a hilarious jackass and being a smug prick that's unpleasant to be around.

(and that people seem to be 'Jerk who takes joy in other peoples' suffering' automatically means they're trolls)

it sort of depends on the type of funny. it's easier to play stupid funny than witty funny. this is why i'd rather play a character who's a dumbass doing stupid things they think are good ideas but actually aren't. most people tend to gravitate toward witty douchebag characters though.

Every Tony Stark I have ever played with has this problem. That's not hyperbole. I have never found one who could do Tony's asshole wit and charm routine without it coming out stilted, forced, and boring.

that's because it's stilted, forced, and boring in canon
