Unfunny wanky stereotypes

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

imo, don't. speaking as someone who specifically doesn't tag, it's irritating when other people do it for me. we're each responsible for our own tagging, and you're no one's nanny. leave it at that.

Why would you deliberately avoid tagging? It's has zero disadvantages.

maybe they don't want people finding their posts

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
In a game?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
i guess?

But then people could find them anyway manually since it's not locked, it's just...slightly more inconvenient.

false.

i'm in games where you're encouraged to tag both the posts you make and the ones you comment to. as pointed down below, there's no real "hiding" the posts you make, but i don't like to tag the posts i comment into, because i've been subjected to tantrums of 'why are you tagging X and not ME ME ME ME RIGHT HERE AND RIGHT NOW hdu tag out instead of always prioritizing my threads!!!!' . this way, i avoid unwanted attention.

i also know of people who tag selectively, only tagging those posts where their characters've had massive development, as it's easier for them to reconstruct the key points of the progress of their characterization.

You know, the major advantage comm based games have is tags making it easy to find posts. If people don't tag posts then it's harder to find a post than in a journal based game.

you can find the posts someone makes by typing in commurl/?poster=username very easily. it's tagging posts i comment to that i try to avoid because of the reason i just gave.

you might not think it's a good reason, but i've been on the receiving end of enough whinging that i've kind of learned that this methods spares me quite a bit of grief. it's not foolproof, naturally: clingy morons can stumble upon my threads if they comment to the same post, or if someone else plurks about the thread in any capacity - but it minimizes that risk.

sorry to put it this way, but (general) your ease of finding my threads doesn't trump my overall rp comfort. and like i said - if it's a game rule to tag, then that's that, i do it (or i reconsider joining the game, though i can't think that'd ever be a decisive factor for me).

I usually don't tag my replies until the thread is long enough for AC requirements.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
lol no, i'll tag what i want. i'm too organized for your lazy bullshit. this is especially true if i'm a mod or helper mod in the game.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Speaking as someone who used to mod, who wanted that shit for AC and generally keeping track, if you don't tag posts because you forgot, you're annoying, but if you avoid doing it on purpose, you're an asshole.

Go for it, OP. It helps everyone out, except for assholes.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

We have a check-in AC at my game, but if you're absent through the AC period, or if someone comes to me with activity concerns, I check by using the tags. If you never tag your fucking posts, it complicates my life, because I either get to dig through that shit manually (which sorry, but no, I have better things to do with my life) or deal with the inevitable whiny aftermath of some stupid shit who just got dinged for activity.

if it's a game rule to tag all posts, yeah, i'd do it. i commit to the rule implicitly by applying into the game. but if it's just an encouraged routine, then i reserve the right not to for the reason i gave above. if that makes me an asshole, that's that.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
i hope your mod dings you every AC and you have to search around for all the necessary links yourself.

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
we have a check-in kind of AC, so i always have to present my own links anyway. but i produce extras just in case something doesn't work out and the mods need additional AC proofs. i don't expect anyone to cater or do extra work on my count and i've never received any indication that any mod has.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
as a mod I want to say fuck you for taking a tag space on the community and not using it.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
so let me get this right

you give a damn about the system in fear of what other people may say about your tagging? are you fucking kidding me? why would you care about those whiners anyway?

yes you're an asshole

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
because it's my inbox/plurk they whine in. i'm sure you're going to suggest something along the lines of dropping them, or keeping better company, but we both know that if the rp community were that drama-free, we wouldn't be here.

i'm not sure what to tell you: you think i'm an asshole for not using a tag, when my practice doesn't exactly harm anyone: it doesn't affect my activity and it doesn't make additional work for mods, as i scrupulously provide them with all the necessary ac proofs and have never had an issue on this count. i'm not sure i even get the above anon's argument about "taking up a tag space", because i've never been in a game where the mods asked before assigning you a tag - it's like dropping a gift someone doesn't need in their lap, then berating them for not using it. i mean, thanks? but i didn't ask for it, so you can't... really hold me accountable for it.

the only thing i will grant is that my habit makes it harder for people who are not participating in threads with me to find them - but, again, to be honest, i'm not sure why the potential comfort of the rare voyeur (who can get a grasp of my characterization anyway by checking out my posts, easily findable via the /?poster=username shortcut) should trump my own. in the end, that's what you all seem to be arguing for: that i have some kind of responsibility to make my threads as easily findable as possible, when, unless that is an actual game rule, i really don't.

but we both know that if the rp community were that drama-free, we wouldn't be here.

i've kept myself drama free since i started playing in 2008, so yes, it's a matter of keeping better company. the fact you're enabling those babies is what makes this really annoying.

the tag space is about comms having a limit on how many tags you can create. in big games, mods have to delete old tags of characters that aren't in the game anymore to make room for the new ones. so if you ever want to go back and find the stuff you played, you can't.

it isn't about potential comfort. it's about fucking respecting the system the mods establish in a game. it's there for a reason.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
but here's the thing: if it's not a rule, you have no obligation to respect the system. at that point, it's just a recommendation, which you are free to take on or dismiss, depending on whether you find it works for you. obviously, if it is a rule, and i play in that game, of course i'll respect it - i sign up for it the moment i apply. that's not even an issue.

the limited tag problem is unfortunate, but... again, i never requested a tag, it was provided by default (again, in games where tagging is not mandatory). if running out of tag space were such an issue, then mods could just as well put down "do you want a tag? y/n" in the taken character form everyone ends up filling out when joining a game. then people like me could opt out.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-24 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
holy shit, everything must be spelt for you? if it isn't in the rules it doesn't count, what? it's part of most games info pages. mods make those so you fucking follow them.

and you're ignoring the most annoying part of your reason. because lots of idiots forget to tag, and it's annoying but we're used to it. but you do it in purpose TO ENABLE WHINING BABIES. that's the real bad part about this whole deal. stop playing with those dumbasses for fuck's sake. it's because of people like you that they're still around.
