Unfunny wanky stereotypes

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

so i was watching "my 600lb life" and after seeing it i don't get HAES. i'm all for loving who you are so who curr if you're ugly/a bit overweight/whatever, but how can a morbidly obese woman who's bound to a bed/wheelchair, has diabetes, can't sleep w/o a respirator or she'll suffocate, and other serious weight-related problems say she's perfectly healthy while simultaneously blaming health issues for her weight? like she'll swear she's healthy until you bring up the fact that her knees can no longer support her body and suddenly she has tons of medical excuses. and places like tumblr are fully supporting it. i honestly can't fathom this.

to make it rp related, my character made a network post asking if anyone wanted to join him in setting up a dojo/gym type place because there are shounen idiots everywhere who need to train. my guy made an offhand comment in a thread telling a weepy woobie to "come get in shape and spar!!". cue another character treadjacking with HAES bullshit and it honestly felt like they were just being a mouthpiece for their mun. i won't reveal the game/thread because it's a small playerbase but if you can find it, feel free to link for your own amusement.

the first part is a brewing shitstorm, not touching that

the second part is probably because dwrpers let their own social justice opinions bleed over into their characters too much, which is why most games are full of sensitive body positive feminists who are accepting of everything whether or not that makes sense for the character

tbh it's held me back from apping certain character types (not hardcore white supremacists or anything in your face triggering) because i don't want thread after thread of "you said all these other things in this post but i'm ignoring them because your beliefs are wrong and this is why"

This is why I stopped playing villains in games. No matter how many times I said 'this is IC for my character and does not reflect my personal opinions' someone always got sand in their vagina. The ironic thing is, they'd take offense to the most minor things but would want my villain to rape and abuse their precious characters for drama.

people having trouble separating their "this is someone being a shitty person irl" kneejerk reaction from "this is someone writing a character being a shitty person and doesn't mean the player agrees" and wanting to get their indignation out somewhere, probably

i've considered and decided against apping religious nuts multiple times because i don't want to deal with the ooc shaking and crying about how i must be an intolerant fundie psycho in my free time

it's taking a reasonable opinion or thought - the idea that someone being fat doesn't define them or make them a terrible person - and then amping it up to a ridiculous extreme in their desperation to feel righteous indignation

uh if you're 600lbs and can't leave the bed then you're not healthy, so obviously HAES doesn't even remotely apply in this case

i'm not even sure what you're trying to prove with that, if anything

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
i think what op is trying to say (very poorly) is that people who become this large are using haes as an excuse to not do something about their problems. at least that's what i'm getting from this.

HAES isn't applicable in either situation. It doesn't say that there are no obesity-related health risks, or that there's no reason to get in shape, it says that you can get in shape, be healthy, and make healthy choices without being thin. People who say otherwise are misinterpreting, generally deliberately.

And there's a reason why that is called "morbidly obese". The definition itself means that it is extremely unhealthy and the person pretty much has one foot in their grave if they don't do something about the weight.

And with that many issues, honestly I'd have to wonder if she'll live for much longer than a year without some major lifestyle changes starting with diet. Seriously, having to sleep with a respirator? All it takes is the power going out and she's dead.

people get called deathfat when they're way skinnier than that (or... less fat?) and actually genuinely healthy, tbh

like sleeping-with-a-respirator can't-walk is super bad but not everyone who's called deathfat is actually at death's door

(Anonymous) 2014-02-23 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
i think people who get to that point need serious therapy alongside diet changes. when you're at THAT level, i can't help but think there must be a psychiatric problem at the heart of it
