Looks like the translator of SDR2 (DR1 & SDR2 have different translators) is a huge fan of the series and has played through both games on the PSP before NISA got rights to the series, interestingly enough.

i'm a newbie to the fandom who only just read oren's translations; i really enjoyed them, but i'd actually like to read some others, since i've heard that oren's are fairly non-literal (which i don't innately mind, loose translations usually read a hell of a lot better than strict "that person is the one who has done the thing!"-style translations) and i'm curious about the differences.

where can i find them, and what's the strong and weak points of each of them? is there any one especially considered the best?

From what I understand, there's various SDR2 translations floating around on Tumblr, there's Project Zetsubou's translation patch for the first game, and there's NISA's official translation of the first game which just came out.

From what I've seen, I don't think any of them are necessarily better than the others? You're going to find a lot of people who consider Oren's the best primarily because it was the first one, but they all seem to have their merits and flaws. PZ's for example flows better than Oren's LP for the first game, but is full of random memes thrown in everywhere. NISA's is serviceable but Ishimaru's a little off. Oren's SDR2 LP reads really well, but he butchered some characters and things. And so on and so forth.
