rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Re: comic book characters with lots of history
(Anonymous) 2014-02-04 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)The above anon is right, wiki's can be helpful, but don't just read the wiki. Use the wiki and then try to look up the comic if you can to actually read it. You don't have to read it all, but I'd say definitely actually read the comics if you get a canonmate that the wiki says your character interacted with in a crossover or in a team book at some point. One of my biggest annoyances as a comic book player was playing with someone who interacted with my character for a very long time on a team, but since the issues were pretty old the player didn't bother to read them. They just looked over the wiki and tumblr scans. That meant they didn't get that our characters actually had a pretty big past together.
My suggestion there would be if you enter a game with people from the canon already there, use the wiki to see if your character has interacted with those characters, and then try to find those issues and actually read them. OR ask the players there! I would NEVER mind if someone PM'ed me and said that they were new to comics and wanted some suggestions or to discuss the relationship! In fact, if someone did that I'd probably be happy to give them any issues they interacted in.
Which is another thing I'd suggest with characters that have been around a while, discuss things with any canonmates that come in and be open. If you don't think you've read something with them, go ahead and admit that. I'd like to think that more often than not the other player would be happy to help you out or discuss things. If you have any friends that you know are really into comics you might want to consider talking to them too.
With backstories, it's best to just pick the one being used in recent canon UNLESS you're planning on playing the character from really far back. If there are two conflicting ones that are used, pick the one that seems most plausible or the one used most. You could even go with the one you like more or just talk to any canonmates and see what they use first. Good luck anon!
