Jumping into this obviousanon thread... one of mine is a SF world where humans have recently landed on the planet, and the many sentient species already living there are technologically behind/use a form of very different biotechnology, so the newcomer humans are sort of interesting and unusual, and their technology is pretty coveted. There are a lot of rising political tensions and an impending invasion, but the two OCs I tend to play from this setting I take from before all that. Less of a headache, when I haven't worked out the finer points of the conflicts yet. But it always makes for a fun "what, you mean I'm on Earth? OH GOD THAT'S SO FAR AWAY" intro for jamjars.
