NON-FANTASY/SF OCS

Is there such thing in rp?

i've seen a couple high school character OCs, some secret agents, and FBI agent, and a bounty hunter.

but to be honest, the more "normal" a player tries to make the character, the more boring they are. they end up with nothing making them stand out and turn into generic nice guys/girls that can be swapped out because they don't make an impression. this isn't to say that you can't do amazing normal characters, but a lot of them just end up being forgettable.

you mean normal and boring like bella swan?

also i feel like it all depends on balance. while trying to make your character too "normal" will risk making them boring, going for something that is utterly "interesting and extraordinary" will make them just as eyeroll-worthy. when writing characters i just try to approach them as, gasp, people as opposed to what I want them to be perceived as.

yes that's definitely one type. i've seen my share of OCs that people would go "oh look how normal they are. they aren't like all those other characters with powers or quirky personalities, they're NORMAL." and they were the most bland and lacking of personality i've ever seen. they would be nice people to know in real life, but in rp they are just really dull and don't stand out. those kind of characters do not translate well into being interesting in this kind of setting.

but then i've seen some really terrible super powered types from badly developed worlds where it's obvious they didn't bother to put much thought into it.

any character can be a good character if you think of them as a whole person, but a married bank teller with a husband and two kids who just paid off her mortgage and is saving for that vacation to maui is just the kind of character most rpers will ignore for being too uninteresting.

Of course. What a strange question. I don't think they are boring at all.

Sometimes the "interesting and extraordinary" background of an OC seems very forced, as if it's written only so that the character wouldn't be considered boring.

What does SF mean?

none that i currently rp, but i've got a few journals for ocs from some horror stories i've written. one of them is an older russian hacker dude who suffers burns on the entirety of the left half of his body, chubby, doesn't go out very much. not sure if i'd ever app him anywhere, though.

this is mainly what i rp, tbh. i think with just a little effort, you can actually make quite engaging characters out of completely "normal" ocs.

There are. One of my favorite PSLs uses my normal OC who is part of the French resistance and has helped downed pilots, blown up munitions shipments, stolen plans, etc.

Two more faves are Steampunk characters (so more SF/Fantasy I guess). One is an airship captain/smuggler. The other one is a secret agent for Her Majesty's Secret Service. His cover is a bumbling naturalist. He's currently after a Russian spy.

Normal characters can be interesting. Most novels use normal characters dealing with extraordinary circumstances. I think boredom sets in when people fail to do anything with their normal OCs.

years ago I made a journal on LJ for a defense attorney from McCarthy-era America, big Free Speech Advocate, has to use a cane because of he got nailed by polio as a kid (or crutches if it's a bad day and he needs extra support), can quote The Big Sleep from memory, and shamefully tucks a copy of The Magazine of Science Fiction and Fantasy into his brief case to read during lunch.

I still kicked myself for not apping him to Mayfield

is a neurotic photographer that is cursed with a jealous spirit that kills/hurts the one she loves count? or anything that has 'fantastical' things like ghosts and stuff count as fantasy?

if so i guess my hermit author who ghostwrites under a male identity (ending up needing to give credit to a washed up actor to avoid detection) from the 1940s who is part of the american communist party is the one. theyre strong when it comes to characterization and dialogue but suck at worldbuilding and plotting, great in horror and mystery genres but is terrible at comedy and romance (or the time's comedy and romance since it didn't appeal to them) and they can a chimney glow with envy with how much smoke they produce when chainsmoking as they reach a deadline when not drinking a bootleg keg's worth of booze. as a result their health is fucking terrible and need to carry a 'do not help me' around in their wallet in case they drop in the middle of the grocery store.
